Vetter Windjammer II (I think)
« on: May 11, 2010, 08:14:26 PM »
This thing was brand new only 36 or 37 years ago.    ;D

I picked it up off the local Craigslist tonight and will begin cleaning it up.  It came off a CB750 so it should fit.  However, I plan to try to make some brackets so that I can swap it to the CBX as well.  I was surprised at how light it is as I had always heard they were pretty heavy.   It has held up really well and I think reflects the high quality of the Vetter product.

I am pretty pumped about it.  Also got a crash bar with it for the 750.

I got a later jammer and it is awesome for highway cruising!

I saw the edging on that one is beat up, you can get original style parts directly from Craig's site.

Good video, it really does help me to understand just how quiet it can get behind a Vetter fairing. Certainly check out the Craig Vetter website, there is so much information there as well as some pictures that'll really take you back.  I was looking for an early fairing like that but wound up with a W-J 4, not sure if I'll ever use it but I wanted to have one handy anyway just in case.

This is one of the few opportunities we have with these bikes to say, "if you have to ask, you wouldn't understand."

Can we ask what you paid?

Nice score.

Why would you want that??

Several reasons - First, the wind / rain protection offered can extend the riding season.  Plus it is removable, so I can always take it off for the summer.  I have done some 400, 600, 700 and even a 1000 mile ride in a day and I think the wind protection would be beneficial for those days when you are going a long way.  I am thinking of a ride from Birmingham to Wisconsin this summer, which is 700+ miles.  I might do that in a single day up and a separate single day back with a few days in between.  Finally, the storage capacity in the side pockets is surprisingly ample and would be welcome on long trips.

Plus, the last bike I had with a fairing was my '86 Concours that I sold around '98 or so.  Just trying something new.

Thanks.  Yes, I paid $75 and got the fairing, the bracket for the 750 and he threw in a decent looking crash bar.  I agree that having one available is nice, whether it is on the bike or not.

That wind protection makes a HUGE difference! No way to overstate that. If I had a different mount, I would take it on and off at will but my mount requires me to remove the forks and so that is more than a 5 minute job.

I have a WJ3 complete with lowers.  It needs a mounting tab on bracket rewelded from incident with a dog.  Needs new pocket covers as well....and a headlight assembly.  Other than that I do miss not having it on the bike at times...but the wind does get bad out here and tends to push the bike around when its mounted up.

I have the original Vetter Winjammer (and lowers!) on mine, have since new in 1971. It's the older, hand-laid fiberglass version (yours is ABS, more flexible). I have ridden back-to-back-to-back 1000 mile days with it, then got off at the end of the day and enjoyed places like Carlsbad Caverns or Mount Rushmore or such. The difference in fatigue is simply amazing. I've ridden through summer thunderstorms with only wet toes, through sandstorms that removed the paint from the bike's sidecovers and sandblasted the windshield to where I had to get another (my brother was on his 500 then, his, too!), and crossed and re-crossed the American West behind this fairing. It makes me far more visible in traffic and stops an awful lot of stuff tossed at me by cars and construction trucks on the road.

That's just the short story! I won't ride any significant distance without it, now.

When you install it, be sure to add some 1/2" long spacers into the fork tubes up front: your worn springs will sag the front down with the extra 18 lbs. Resist the urge to load the front pockets: they are just too handy!  ;D

One trip to Black Hills with my wife found 440 lbs on the front wheel and 680 lbs on the rear: by moving some items into the fairing I was able to rebalance the load to 600 on the rear and it stopped the over-heavy rear load wobble that can happen in heavy 2-up touring. I added air forks early on with this fairing by installing Schraeder valves into the fork caps: I run about 5 PSI with no load and up to 12 PSI fully loaded and 2-up.

Craig developed the Windjammer on his own CB750!

They're light because they are made of ABS.  I had a copy of one that was fiberglass.  Talk about heavy!

Sad thing is, I would not call the abs version light EXCEPT when compared to the fiberglass version! :D

I had one on my 73, I rode in weather down to freezing, never did get the lowers though. we took it on vacation once and came back looking like the truck in the grapes of wrath. there were things tied all over it.

I have 2 later versions an SS and the model 5 both in nice shape.  I paid $30 a piece and they came with mounts for a 750 and a 550.  One is for a friend for his Kawi 750 and he has his own mount for that so the 550 mount is surplus.  If any long trips are on I would mount it up on my 750F but for just local I don't think I will use it.  Not the prettiest thing in the world but sometimes comfort is more important than looking cool or being hardcore. :D

The mounts are the trickiest part in finding one of these.  They are not labeled and they are specific to the model and sometimes even the year.

Tell me about it. I wanted to get one and mine was bent before I got the bike. Yeah, the one supposedly for a 750 was too narrow! Maybe some day I will fab up a mount that can just go on and off when I need it. Still have to remove the headlight though. maybe a big screen with lower is better! :D

I would like to find a set of lowers but they are tricky too as they are model specific.  Th best bet is to find the gear that came off the same bike as yours.  Once the original bike is out of the picture there is no way to tell.  At least the fairing itself is generic.

The lowers were made from a big blank, with notches cut out for the various models. At worst, you might get a set that has a notch for [nothing] on your bike.  :)

I was thinking of a windshield that you can get lowers for. Still not as usable as a wj but much lighter. I love those pockets!

I gave away the one that was on my bike. The guy really wanted it though and gave me $20 to hold it until he got to the house. These days I ride on the same types of days that I play golf. Sunny and calm.

I know the edges of the abs ones have 2 layers. Basically the inside mold and the outside shell. The trim piece that goes around, holds them together.
