7 plates in clutch on 550..or just standart setup
« on: June 03, 2010, 12:00:42 am »
hey i vorks on my clutch..its that type vith that dobbelt plate in mittel ..have a idea to remove that thing and mont an ekstra set of friktion and metal plate insted...but hvy did honda do that mod..only for noising clutch??..or more for stabilicing for vibrasions in plates

hvat setup works best..i dont care abaut a littel noise,,if its vorks best vitaut thar dobbelt plate..have done search,,and faund a lot ,,but no drive test resultalts....and sorry for bringing this old thing back for 699 time..now it sucks

i tryed to put 7 plates in,,it almost fit,,byt the 4 fingers get to short,,and springs get to kompresed..have some tryed to make some distance pieses? (afstands ringe)to put betveen..to make springs right.....or is this set op ,,give to less space in bottom of clutch to relase..chlutch presure plate can not move back,,for "outer comp" pos 1..
last  thing ,,did some now hov thik that ring..pos 14 are..that thing missed in my clutch..i have made one vho is 1,8 mm..but think it skud be hardnet steel..

and again  sorry for my viking english..lars larsen---strynboen--denmark

Hallo Larsen,

I'm curious as to why you would want to do this? Wouldn't it be easier to use heavier (stiffer) clutch springs?

hey  its for not to overload the kabel  and grip ,,and keep the soft handle  ..ve do somthing similær on yamaha mopeds..but have to modifing a lot to get 3 plates in a fs1...but in first place i need to now..shud i keep that dobbelt plate or thange to the orginale clutch
sistem vith 6 normal plates..its a stock bike..så thances are maybe overkill..like it stock..but like alså a strong clutch

i think you are going the hard way

the stock clutch is fine for up to 60 hp on the rear wheel by adding just a 1.5mm washer to the stock springs

with barnett kevlar plates you could even just fit without stronger springs and get a very stong clutch. not an expensive mod, maybe 60$ or such

Late model ('77-'78) straight cut plates with Barnett springs is more than you will ever need for a 550 unless you go Turbo....

I thought about replacing that double steel with another friction and regular steel plate.

The problem may be whether or not there is enough free play, and I won't know until I can finish the bike.

Left) 78 basket replacing that double plate with an 8th friction and another regular steel.

Center) 78 stock clutch

Right) 75 Barnett clutch

Hopefully you can see the amount of "free space" in an asssembled clutch. It may well drag without enough space.

As was mentioned shimmed springs or Barnett pieces with Honda clutch parts will take more than stock power but let us know what you decide to try.
