so this happened today. sorry no pics yet because im soo pissed off. was riding along and wasnt horsing it but wasnt ridin like a granny. was shifting up through the gears and at about 60 in 4th it came out of gear because i wasnt very crisp with the shift. and it revved to the moon. got it into 5th and a loud tapping noise was coming from the motor. just a few miles from home to inspect that im not spewing oil or anything like that and made the decision to limp it the couple miles home keeping the rpm low. could tell exactly what it was it was a very misadjusted tappet. popped the tappet ports on the valve cover for cyl 4 and lo and behold half of the adjuster and the nut are missing didnt dig deep into it tonight just not in the mood. but what im thinking is the nut was loose and and when it went into false neutral the adjuster came in contact with the adjuster cover and sheared off, at least thats all that makes sense. il need to fish out the missing bits hopefully they are not in the bottom of the motor already and are somewhere under the valve cover and i can get them wothout taking off the valve cover. i have a spare otor so i can steal what i need from there but damnit. its been running so good. put over 2500 miles on it from march already. i was planning on building the spare motor this winter for my drag bike but might be building it for this bike if there are a lot of metal shards floating around in this motor, its deffinetly getting an oil change after this and a second one short thereafter.

minor update. found the oter half of the adjuster sans the nut. so thinking nut backed off adjuster hit cover adjuster parted ways with its better half. havent fished it out yet, will require the tank to be off and some ingenuity.

got some damage to the step child today. took a turn as i always do today and due to some recent rain it was a little slick and laid her down. back tire kicked out and before you knew it i was sliding on the ground. stator cover took the brunt of the damage but my bars are bent and lost my bar end mirror. Luckily I am fine just some road rash on my knee. i always wear a leather so now that has some character. I am extremely dissapointed in myself Ive been riding for three years and never came close to anything like this. i am thinking i degreased my engine today i must have gotten something on a tire and boom no traction. no cracks in the stator but its trashed luckily i have a spare. hit my exhaust a bit too but a little hammering and some paint and you wont be able to tell.

it's our crappy toledo roads - they're all soaked in oil and patched up with tar. :P   at least no injuries!

Just remove the oil sump pan. You will see it.
