One of the things I learned on my first street bike was that making eye contact didn't mean anything. I learned to watch the front wheels of the cars approaching intersections, as this gives a clue what they are going to do: Are they going to stop, or blow the stop sign? (those damn spinner wheel covers scared the hell out me once, though ;)) If they are approaching from the right, and their front wheels are veering to their right, be prepared to swerve to the left when they pull out in front of you. In the same setting, if the wheels are veering to the driver's left, or straight, they are likely to shoot out across your bow, and your evasive action would be to swerve to the right.

If i have to be stuck behind or beside anyone for any length of time i just watch them in their mirrors,1 it tells me i am not in their blind spot and 2 i have found i am getting really good at reading what their intentions are. I like to be out in front in traffic, makes me feel a lot safer.

Yeah, I like to keep the potential problems out in front, where I can see them coming, at least at higher speeds. Sometimes, at intersections, I will "hide" behind a car and follow them through, ready to grab the brakes in case someone pulls out in front of them.

just riding today along the open road,i was behind a bike who was behind a caravan,as hes gone to pass on a long clear straight the caravan moved over to the right just as the bike went by,no trouble there was room, the caravan had moved across to give about half a dozen people on foot a wider berth,,this is how schit happens.

Not to get between any of you guys but you all make pretty valid and valuable points . . . newbie over hea appreciates all the pointers!

All of your combined experiences just being shared is more than I've learned in terms of what to look out for and be cautious of, than all the training I soaked up at the advanced riding school I attended.

I had been riding my CB550 for 10 years on a permit, and with no front brakes. I rode it like a dirtbike. In 2001 I bought my ZRX1200 and decided to take a Motorcycle safety class to get my license. Everything I had EVER done on a motorcycle up until that point was wrong. I learned more about handling and personal safety in those 2 days than in 10 years of on the road riding. Just basic stuff like when you come to a stop, ALWAYS keep your bike in gear, and foot on the brake all while looking into your mirror to make sure the car in back of you is slowing. Acceleration on a motorcycle will save your life. FYI I am 33 and fell in love with riding when I was 5.....on a Honda Z50. memories :)

To really learn the fundamentals of riding and how a bike reacts to different situations, you need to spend a couple of years riding dirt bikes.
Enter a few MX races and you will learn to watch the track conditions, what others are doing and going to do, what it feels like when you lose traction,(both front and rear), and how to fall down.
You will also learn to operate the bike without having to think about everything you are doing.
This will give you much more time to look around and watch out for idiots and road hazards.
It will also help you understand the benefits of proper riding gear.

My trick here is that I've already noticed the dumb pedestrians and anticipated a dumb car moving around them. So I stay put until all the dumbness passes, then, I'm out front again as quick as possible.

This was my point in a nutshell, everyone thinks they know how to ride but in reality very few do. Defensive riding courses {and good ones} will teach you more in 1 day than most people learn in a lifetime.

I showed up late to the MSF in my teens. All that was left in the way of bikes was a YSR50  :D

Not me in that pic but I'm 6'3" so you get the idea. Turns out the techniques (countersteer, clutch feathering, front / rear brake and when/how to use them, etc) are the same all the way down to Krusty the Klown sized bikes.

Everyone go take an MSF course. Worth every single penny and then some. I credit them for not having a get off at any serious speed - I take full credit/blame though for the foot in oil drop, too quick turn in loose gravel, the wedged under my suddenly locked up front wheel loose traffic turtle in a corner while on the front brake at 4am (it left a nice chalk mark on the pavement to commemorate it's attempt to kill me - the only time looking through a corner has screwed me) and the 2 beer missed shift doing a california stop then right turn layover (1 beer's too much I found out).

An enthusiastic +1 for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. If you haven't you really should and I should get some cash together for a refresher at this point. Show up early if you're not bringing your own bike  ;D

30 years of riding an XS650.  Just the surviving the vibration alone should qualify me. ;D  Took that bike on one 6000 miler and many 2500 mile trips. No misadventures or breakdowns but plenty of adventure is a successful trip to me.  While overcoming adversity on the road is important it is just as important to have a sound bike and good planning and not put yourself in that situation.  Constant problems on the road don't make the warrior.
My only accident came when I got hit by a car in town close to home.  You are probably safer out on the road that riding around at home.

im with scrap value, you really have to learn on dirt bikes to get a thorough feel, plenty of brake lock ups and powersliding is how you ride dirt,we used to practice in a mud bowl with the front brake on and power straight ahead, feet up dohnuts on gravel or sand, ive had plenty of low speed and high speed dirt crashes and there is a technique to knowing exactly when youve lost it ,with no chance of regaining it,now to plan "B"all in less than half a second start thinking how to land or slide or tumble or stay on the falling/sliding bike?all this is what a lot of road only riders dont learn because youd have to trash a fully faired road bike or a chrome cruiser to do it,dirt bikes are built for this more or less, sure we had a few busted wrists and collar bones amounst us,adds that touch of saftey for next time,we were all pretty good riders on dirt into our thirties,im the only road rider of them all,and they have all settled down etc with no bikes,a guy a few doors up from me in his late 50s or early 60s has just decided to learn to ride a bike,i doubt hes even ridden a bicycle in years,i know him and was told on his third lesson with a school hes dropped the bike and ended up with a broken or fractured collar bone and wrist or something,i dont know the full story like was it on the road or in a training area or what size bike etc,,so schit can still happen,in this case i think itll be a total lack of any experience on two wheels at all,my wife sort of wants to learn, shes 40 and im not pushing her!i said well buy an xr80 first and she can learn the same way i did, another thing is being a bit more mechanically minded, knowing what the bike is doing, whats going on under your butt can help you.

1+ to both dave500 and scrapvalue about riding dirt-bikes! That is where you really learn how to ride; experience on the street is more about avoiding the dangers from inattentive drivers.

I have heard of very experienced dirt riders start riding on the street, and seriously screwing up because of their "knowledge"..

One of them took a neighbor down with him with his stupid 'I am a good rider, cuz I raced MX".. BS..

I have seen very experienced dirt riders do very stupid things on a street bike that are instinctual on dirt, like putting a foot down when making a tight, slow turn.

I'm sure having previous experience on dirt bikes can be helpful for some on the street, but it isn't necessary to being a seasoned, experienced street rider, and can often be harmful if you can't get out of dirt-riding habits.

+1..
The stuff you got away with for years on backrods wearing body aemour can have VASTLY different results if tried on the street..

Worse yet is, it can hurt or kill others you are riding with..

Not saying they CANT be great street riders, but there is a bit of an UNlearning/learning curve ahead of them when they start riding street..

And your previous post says that I don't know the fundamentals of riding or how a bike reacts in different situations simply because I haven't spent much time on a dirt bike, and you're right in a certain sense.  I don't know the fundamentals of dirt bike riding or how a dirt bike reacts when ridden on dirt

If you already posses the fundamentals, then there is nothing else for you to learn. You officially know everything. Congradulations!

Why are you being like that?  I just don't think it's necessary to have dirt bike experience to be a good street bike rider, and there are a hundred years worth of qualified, accomplished, and highly-skilled street bike riders to back up that opinion.   I never said I know everything about riding motorcycles, and never implied it either.  Do you think you do just because you have dirt experience?

In the 80's/90's all the best professional riders came out of flat track. I stopped paying attention awhile ago but are the top rated track riders now coming out of motocross?
