It has an ODB 1 system on it. The check engine light is working correctly as I have pulled the code by tripping the diag. box. Car places that test for free like auto zone only have a ODB2 reader. t took a while but I tracked down an ODB1 reader. About half way on my drive to California the light came back on, I have not had time yet to see what code it is throwing now. The people who had it before had come from an emission free state and it did probably sit because they couldn't get it to pass here.

It had new correct plugs in it that were not gapped, fixed that.

Ran a bottle of sea foam.

Has no leaks, EGR system work.

Dont think there is blow by, all the other readings were ridiculously low.

I wish I had more time to work on it but I only have 1 day a week off work.

Hmm the gap could make the temps go up I believe.  You said you tripped a code before what was the code.  And FYI OReilly's  has a loaner tool program and they have a computer tester that covers the OBD I & II and has all the vehical specific connectors.... that or you could just find out which 2 pin you need to put a paperclip across in the computer connector and the engine light will just flash the codes out for you.

For anyone interested I finally did get it to pass. We ended up welding 2 cats. under it. The timing belt was also 1 tooth off it seems. The emission reading on this thing are now incredibly low.

Moral of the story. Cars are the worst.

Figures...That was probably the problem the whole time. ::) I hope you changed the belt when you went in and found that. Usually if the belt slipped once, its prone to do it again. Glad to see you got it to pass. ;D
