Which tire should I go with?
« on: June 14, 2010, 02:07:20 PM »
Hi Folks!

I've been looking around for new tires for my CB750 K5 and came up with these three as my options, but I got stuck there. So I figured I'd ask for the forums opinion(and try out this neat poll feature).

Preferably I'd like a balance between performance and longevity.

If you have another suggestion for me, choose "Other" and post your suggestions.

Thanks

I have been using Michelin Macadam lately but they are a bear to mount, a tight fit. I've used several 501's, have heard good things about the BT's but picked up an Avon AM26 front this time.

Not sure about the Spitfires but the others are very good tires.

+1 on the Michelin Macadam.  Mine are great and the price was pretty darn good too

I like my Dunlop 404's.  And for oil, I recommend...

Good call on the 404's. I'll take a look at them.

Any other suggestions/recommendations?

I just put Metzeler Lastertecs on my CB750F.  3.25-19 front and 4.00x18 rear.

Bike handles great.  Steer mostly by leaning.  The bars don't need to be pushed on to hold your turn line.  Handles almost like the 550 now.

I run Shinko 712's on both my bikes. I think it's the best of both worlds, and doesn't catch my wallet on fire.

They have the wear life of a Dunlop, with the bite of a Michelin.

Hey TT - is it true that the 550 handles better than the 750?

I have both the 550ss and the 750ss in my garage now. The 550 definitely handles very well it is a lot lighter and smaller.

We have Spitfires on our HD and our CB650. We like them. They grip on the turns, do well int the rain and seem to be wearing well overall. Many others here have gone with them and seem to like them too.

In the end, buy what you like.

Hey TT - is it true that the 550 handles better than the 750?

All the 750's I rode had oversize tires on them.  They never felt like natural riders, meaning you had steer or counter-steer them when leaned over, in order to hold your turn line and make it predictable.  I compared it to my 72 Ford truck.  ;D
The 550's can get like this too, if the oversize tires have any sort of square off, of the tires.  Otherwise, you can steer them around corners with hands off bars just by leaning.  I could never do that with the 750's.  Always had to steer or counter-steer in the corners.  And the steering seemed "sluggish".  I thought that was just the 750's way, until I put the inch size Metzelers on the bike recently.  It changed the handling way toward the better.   I would expect new tires, whatever the brand, to be better than the old ones, as they now have a nice new crown on them.  But, I was quite surprised how the handling changed to a far more neutral bike that pretty much anticipates your turns with a subtle weight shift.  There is still more weight with the 750, so it takes a little more "will" in the turns compared to the 550.  But, there is now no fight.  If the 750 with stock tire follows the same pattern as the 550's with stock tires, they will wear more evenly and not make the tire crown flatten near a quickly as oversize tires. ...unless if maybe all your driving is straight up freeway.  But, even then you don't have to over-inflate stock size tires like you do with oversize to keep the sidewalls stiff.  So, wear should be much better with the stock sizes.  It has been so far on the 550.  I think it is a good bet the 750 will behave similarly.
I don't think I've put 100 miles on the 750's Metzelers, yet.  So far, I'm really happier with the bike than I though I would be.  I'll be pushing it a bit harder after I get the new fork seals in.

I like the Dunlop 404's.  A friend uses them on his XS650 and I will do the same for my two XS's this summer.

I had Michelin Macadams last year, good tires, switched to the Bridgestone BT45 this season, mostly because I swithced my rims, & am happy. Cant say I prefere one over the other. Both good choices.

I had the spitfires and they wear a long time. Because of storage times, I had to replace them being as how they were 10 years old! I had probably 4000 miles on them and had probably another 3-4000 more. Good rain traction too. Only gripe is the tendency to follow the rain grooves that get cut into concrete around here. but that is not so much a fault of the tire as any tire with a center groove will probably do that.

I JUST got my shinko 712 tires yesterday and so I can only attest to build quality. They look excellent. Every bit as good as the high buck tires look. The rubber feels good and is pliable. I can't wait to get them on and see how they do! And as Ved said, they are not wallet burners. I got mine for $98.98 with FREE shipping for both!

TwoTired- by oversized, I assume you mean the recommended rim size correct? One problem I've been having is trying to figure out how wide a tire I could/should go with on the stock(19" front, 18" rear) rims. I want a responsive ride.

Ved- I didn't look at Shinkos since they were a smaller brand. But at least two of you seem to like them. What sizes did you go with for your 750?

Well I have a 77 and the rims are wider on the rear. So I got a 110/90-19 front and a 130/90-17 rear. That is the size for the 77/78. You would probably want a 100/90-19 and 120/90-18 I think for the earlier bikes.

rear tire   http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/31/401/6205/ITEM/Shinko-712-Rear-Tire.aspx   $46.99

front tire   http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/31/401/6204/ITEM/Shinko-712-Front-Tire.aspx    $41.99

Free shipping over $75   This where I got my tires. The free shipping took a bit over a week but that was UPS. the store processed my order the next day but I also ordered after 10pm so they were fast. I think they got the spitfires here too if you want to check those out.

Also, the skinko molds were actually yokohama. Shinko bought them after the yokohama motorcycle tire plant burned down.

a fire sale eh? ;D

yeah my bike had the 19"/18" combo, but I just got a new rear hub that has a 17" so I was thinking of using that. Its a bit wider and I think I'd have more choices in tires. Hmmm I wonder if I could run the 18 up front then?

I use the stock recommended tire size on stock rims.  I've found this to give the best responsive ride.
Pretty sure that is 3.25x19 front and 4.00x18 rear for your bike.

If you have installed wider rims than stock you can use what the tire manufacturer says will fit the rim you have selected.  I don't know what that will do to handling, though.

Okay so far it looks like we have

6 for BT-45s
6 for S11s
5 for GT501s
10 for Others

Some suggestions for other tires are Avon Road Riders, Dunlop 404's, K70's, Metzler Lasertecs, Michelin Macadems, and Shinko 712's. I'll have to do some more research into those.

Anybody else?

Okay thanks for all the input guys. I figured I'd let you know what I decided to go with.

I just ordered myself a pair of Shinko 712's(100/90-19 and 120/90-18). I liked the idea of performance and durability at a low cost.

I'll post more once they arrive and I get them mounted.
