Corbin Seats Email Campaign - Show them we mean business
« on: July 09, 2010, 09:08:28 AM »
OK Guys,

Time to rally around the wagons, as they'd say in the old west (clarification for any non North Americans)

As some of you know we're working with Corbin seats to begin once again the production of after market seats for our bikes! Wouldn't/won't this be nice. No other real options these days. There have been almost 18,000 members signed on to our site and MANY visitors. Seems some of us are in a bigger hurry than Corbin but Corbin HAS said they intend on beginning production once again, they just have other issues to deal with first. I think I have gotten the point across that we WANT seats. They have told me they need a bike at their shop for up to a month as a model for the production of permanent molds. They also mentioned loaner a bike. As far as I know they plan on begining with my beloved CB750F model first and we have a beloved member that can get his bike to them. They are just slower than I'd like.

DO YOU WANT A CORBIN SEAT FOR YOUR BIKE?! The answer is yes! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?! The answer is EMAIL CAMPAIGN. Let them know we are many and we need their help. Let them know we have multiple models by telling them which model and year you have. Please don't tell them I put you up to this! I don't wish to piss them off but.....

I'd also hope our many internationals friends would join in too!

Are we talking stock style replacements for say a 1975 CB750K? That are sub-moremoneythanIcaretospend. Or more cafe seats?

I doubt they'd do stock seats but let them know you are interested and what you'd like to see.

The seat for our 750F is/was called the Gun Fighter.

I have a one of a kind Corbin for my 750K. Back when I bot it, i had to return it twice for alterations and fixes. Customer Service s--ked.  After they got mine right, they said they'd never do another.

They make more on a weeks production run of harley seats than all the CB seats which will probably give them problems to make.

I'd try these guys: http://www.sargentcycle.com/csfriends97.htm  (after viewing, scroll down for link to the site. impressive)

My understanding is they'll make anything one off. Maybe not, but they strike me as caring more than Corbin about custom work.

If you send an email please reply on this thread that you have done so. It would be nice to be able to determine what kind of actual response we provide.

We aren't after custom seats we're after AFTERMARKET seats, Corbin made gun fighter seats at one time for the F and maybe the K models, but have since discontinued the line, however we would like then to start making the gunfighter for these old bikes once again.

Yeah, not one-off seats. They will do those but you have to leave a bike with them for 1 day. What we want is AFTER MARKET NON STANDARD PRODUCTION SEATS that they produce from their sets of molds that they make using the bikes we leave with them for a month.

I would be more then willing to give them my bike, one problem is I am in IL and there is no way I would take my 750F to cali right now. Maybe in 2 years, but not now. That being said, if someone is willing to trailer me and my bike out there, I could go spend a month in california and OR, I have family in Portland, then trailer my bike back afterwards.

Jerry, email sent. The pic in the previous  post is not a Gunfighter seat. I think the Corbin works best with a tailpiece... IMHO

I personally am not interested in a "Gun Fighter" seat, I just want a stock replica for my "stock" '76 750F.  Are they looking to have the whole bike to work with, or would it be ok to send them a factory original seat-only for them to replicate?  I really only need the cover, and something that looks like the original...ya know, the embossed "fake" stitching and all.

Email sent, does anyone have a picture of a 750F with the gunfighter? I have seen them and love them, but I want a picture to save. Also who has ridden with one? What is the comfort compared to a stock seat?

Thanks, we keep track of all requests and I will submit to Mike (Corbin) of course. We're playing catch up a bit in R&D right now, but I know that we've got the classic CBs in our sites!

Thanks much,

I also got an anwser:

Greetings Croix,

We have seats for the later models, but I'm not sure if they fit the 1976. You can see the saddles here: http://www.corbin.com/honda/7983cbgun.shtml

We will be doing some additional tooling later this year as we get caught up in R&D so our applications may change.

Thanks for checking in!

This is just my personal experience, so feel free to flame away.
Good luck getting any kind of customer service from Corbin if you run into any trouble.
I will not buy an aftermarket seat other than Sargent. After visiting the shop for both brands, Corbin in Daytona and Sargent in Jacksonville I couldn't believe how much opposite they were one from the other when it comes to customer support.
Sargent a real pleasure and Corbin it looked like you were begging for something instead of paying for it.
Maybe they changed for good, but personally I will not take a chance.
Just my 2c.

I'm with MCRider and Gaucho.  Even at a dealer level (I worked as a parts manager at franchised dealers in CT for many years) Corbin's customer service was terrible.  THere were customer's seats we'd wait months for without updates.  Calling would get you nowhere.  The only good tale I have regarding Corbin was they sold me a "blem" seat for my Bandit 1200 for a super deal - it had a funny color welt and some imperfections under the leather on the side but it felt great and was a super improvement over my stock seat.  This was way back in 1998.

When the time comes for a saddle for my K7 750 I will send a seatpan to Sargent and in a few weeks I will have my seat back in the mail, customized precisely to my specs.  It will likely be in the "Gunfighter" style, but I've used them in the past  and would call them again tomorrow.

Here's a good sample of their work:

I posted earlier in this thread, essentially the same sentiments, I agree with you.

I've bot several Corbin Seats over the years, like the seats, hate the experience. New business goes elsewhere.

Yeah, I've heard good things about Sargent too but this thread isn't about having a seat repaired or having a custom one-off seat made. The input on Corbin is greatly appreciated. Something to take note of definitely and something that will be brought up with Corbin.

The purpose of this thread/subject is to be able to make a phone call, give a credit card number and have a new custom seat at your front door hopefully within a week without removing your old seat, packing it up and shipping it across the country/world. Let's please try to stay focused on this. Please keep in mind that all the old SOHC CB suppliers that used to produce products for our bikes have moved on to newer more profitable bikes over the decades. We have been forgotten! However, we are a huge audience and we have strength in numbers. I attempt to rally this factor with manufacturers/suppliers to once again make money off us  ;D Case in point: Big APE Jay is now back on board; Dynoman has expanded his offerings. There are others but these come to mind quickly. We need to make this happen and support those that support us!

My questions pertaining to Sargent is: Have they ever produced a seat for our bikes that they keep stocked on their shelves awaiting a phone call to be shipped the next day? If not, would they? Would one of you guys be willing to lead up a Sargent seat effort? That definitely would not be a bad thing. Only downside to having 2 suppliers is the quantity of orders gets divvied up between the 2 and there may not be enough business for both to wish to continue.

Jerry

I'll answer just cuz I was in on the Corbin/Sargent comparo.

It took a few times, but i see what you're going for now. My experience with Corbin would lead me to believe they are leading you on. JMHO, but i don't see them or anyone ever making SOHC CB750K/F seats for stock. I don't see the market. OCICBW Too many of us want something just a little different each time.

Big Jay at APE started with SOHC CB750s and carries on as a personal passion. Without him APE might drop the line. DynoMan situation is similar, I think. Hayabusa's are where the money is. For Corbin, its Harleys. Corbin does not have that personal passion.

Personally, Were i in the market at the moment, I have no problem getting a used seatpan off ebay, sending it to FL, and getting what I want, different from any one else's, back in a few weeks.

I've sent my rear wheel to RaceTEch in CA to have the drum arced, sent the crank to APE in CA, head and cylinders to Racing Engine Service in TX, sent the tank to MD, side covers to CT, no problem, adds to the mystique in my mind.

But, I understand your goal now and carry on! I could be completely off base and you may have something. It wouldn't be the first time.

Jerry

Jerry,
Not trying to be a stick in the mud, but unfortunately Corbin rarely stocks seats premade for anything, even brand new bikes.  In my experience, they manufacture a batch of pans, then make the foam and covers "one off" from molds and patterns as needed.  It states on their site offseason turnaround is about two weeks.  I imagine in season delivery times are much higher.  However, some perseverance may get them to re-introduce the seats for K bikes, esentially make a new batch of seat pans and create seats for our bikes.  They're also talking around $350.00 + shipping on seats they've continually made since 1984.  I can't speculate on how much they'd charge for one made from scratch, especially with a comparitively diminutive market such as ours.

Here's a quote from their site:
"Can I order a saddle different from what is shown on the page?
Absolutely YES! Corbin is a custom saddle manufacturer and virtually all of our products are made to order. We can offer you a variety of colors in styles ranging from flames to scollops or even just a tasteful welt. For detailed information, just go to the Product Info link you'll find on your left (that's the clutch side). "
