Rustic leather seat cover.
« on: July 15, 2010, 12:40:56 PM »
Hey guys, I hope all is well. Getting hot out here in Phoenix.

I have a question on seat covers. I really, really like this look. I am not looking to build a bike with a "brand new" look. I want something scuffed, scratched, grungy. Who cares if the "brass isn't polished" sort of look. Something kinda like this:

What I am looking for is a seat that looks like this. Instead of black (though I would settle for it) I am looking for a rustic leather look. Something that looks worn and been around and about. Does anyone have any ideas? And for something that isn't going to cost the arm and a leg?

Thanks everyone!!

Keep an eye out at thrift stores, Goodwill, etc. for old worn bomber jackets.  Use the back as the seat cover.  I would also like to say that this sounds awesome and you need to post pics if you do it.   ;D

Shoot    Industrial Cafe a PM, or check out his seat build thread.  You'll see that the end product is very, very close to what you're looking for.

Eideteker, I like the idea of an old bomber jacket. I will have to keep an eye out for that. I would prefer to be a lighter tan color as I can always dye it a little darker to suit my tastes.

Thanks for the link Crippler, I will certainly check it out!

Used luggage in thrift shops is also an option. I picked up a well-weathered Tumi foldover soft luggage that has enough hi-grade leather to make several seats. I think it was like $6.00...

Some of the buckles also make interesting strap accessories.  ;D  RR

Tandy Leather sells antique gel stain works real good making leather look old. 3 or 4 different colors etc. You will need to seal it with an acrylic or some other sealer as it will bleed onto your pants.

You know, when I got in trouble, my daddy threatened to tan my ass...now that you put it that way, it doesn't sound like it woulda been that bad.
