what modern classic bike would you ride?
« on: July 23, 2010, 11:28:06 AM »
So if you were to purchase a modern classic bike, what would it be and why??

For me, the Ducati Paul Smart 1000 would be nice...

Close second would be the new FI triumph thruxton 900.

What would you like to see in a modern CB?  I think its time Honda bring back this amazing bike in a lightweight package with modern frame and simple engine/trans configuration.

The red/white/blue Honda is tasty!  What is it, if I may display my ignorance so freely?

My opinion:  Modern and Classic together is an OXYMORON.  Now a modern replica? Maybe the new CB1100 if it were available in the US.

I guess that this would be a "true" modern classic. Fun bikes to ride, but you have to have some wrenching skills. One of the most complete sets of tools ever included with a bike.

I took a demo ride on an Enfield. That was a neat little squirrel. It would be a fun little around town bike, but not much for cruising.

For a modern Classic, I'd choose a Duc GT1000
1978 CB750K Project
2000 Ducati ST2
...and a pedal bike

CB1100R if available here,
900 Norton Commando (cafe racer version) if I could afford it,
Triumph Thruxton if other 2 were unreachable

since we won't be seeing the Honda CB1100 here anytime soon, I would have to say a Triumph Bonneville with some nice open pipes so I can hear the lovely parallel twin music.

RS500GP.

http://www.twostrokeshop.com/Aprilia_RS500_2008.htm

Modern 500cc two-stroke for track OR ROAD!!!!

Take a tiny Aprilia RS250 and shoehorn a massive race-bred 500cc twin into it.

Result?

A bike with more power and torque and EIGHTY LESS POUNDS than a Japanese 600cc Race Replica.

Look at those ports!

Comes with a balanced and blueprinted crank in either the traditional "Screamer" 180* firing order, or the "Big Bang" 90* for better handling and less rocking couple.

I want this bike. No modern bike has EVER tripped my trigger, but this one does.

#1 = 2010 CB1100.  Hands down.
#2 = Triumph Thunderbird Sport.  It's a shame they quite making them.
#3 = Aprilia Shiver 750.  I know, it's not a classic.  I just love it.
#4 = Harley Nightster.  Don't kill me.  I have loathed them (HD) since my brother drove one home in 1976, but there is something about that silver and black nightster that speaks to me
#5 = Ryca CS-1.  Google it!  Thumper, thumper, thumper.  But for $9k, see any of the above.

The new 2010 Royal Enfields come with fuel injection and a decent disc brake up front.  I'm sold on the military green version!  Any idea what the quality of the motors are?  I know they are made in india, but how would one hold up in city traffic?

Spanner,
These new CB1100's are a great bike.
Still have to knock up a few more miles on it to test it out, but so far I'm as happy as a dog with 2 d1cks.
A mate has just bought a new Harley and it's a nice machine, but for 30K I'd be getting 2 of these Hondas without thinking twice about it.

I test rode a Bonneville and nearly crashed from the tears of disappointment that welled up in my eyes.  The Thruxton looks mighty tasty, but after 2 GB500's, I knew that reach would kill me.  So- I got a W650 and love it.

New new;  I want to compare the V7 Classic with the new Royal Enfield UCE and Ural ST.  I heard all the new ST's are pre-sold, but they sure look good.  Occasionally I fantasize about getting into a TU250X, but 'prolly never gonna happen.  Along those lines, I sure like this guy's work; http://britonbees.com/

Top end speed is not much concern to me, as any fool can go fast in a straight line.  Before I think seriously about any other bikes, I want to save my dimes and quarters and go to track school.  There's a lot left in the bikes I already have that I don't tap into.

I felt it was exactly what owners of British and American bikes used to say about UJM's;  like riding a sewing machine.  Cold and dry.  An appliance.  Quite competent, I'm sure- but you don't have to break down by the side of the road or have mirrors fall off to get a little soul in your bike.  A little personality.

I had expectations of paying cash that day for a new bike.  After a little research, I bought a W650 and now I feel a little sorry for Bonneville owners.  I know that makes me sound like an ass (and a pretentious ass, at that), but the W >IMHO< is so much better.  I really like it.  In fact, I think I'll post a picture of it.

Just a couple of mods;

Thanks mate, actually thats what i thought you meant...."sterile" and its a shame because they look so nice and are priced well. I have also looked at the "W" series bikes and was impressed at how "old" looking they were....a little more soul to by the sound of things.... ;)

I'm voting in the Guzzi V7 camp-  just love the look of it.  Second choice would be the thruxton, followed by the ducati.  But seriously.  A guzzi.
