heavier oil, leaky head?

would putting heavier weight (20w50 in place of 10w40) lead to more seeps and leaks out of the ehad gasket?

Not likely.

However, the additives in the oil bottle are another matter.  What brands and type did you got to/from?

If the 10/40 was dino and the 20/50 is synthetic.  Highly likely.

i went from 10/40 honda oil to 20w50 castrol. neither is synthetic

Thicker oil is harder to push around the oil passageways.  It makes sense that the gallery pressure would be a little higher.  Particularly when cold. The SOHC4 has an oil gallery running up the cylinder block to the head at each end right next to the head gasket.  Which bike do you have?  Some of them have restrictors up top which would exacerbate the cold high pressure issue.

Was the Castrol designated for motorcycle use, or generic automotive use?

the castrol was recomended by the local sohc4 guru.
i have a 76 cb550 supersport.

I recommend Amsoil 10w40 Motorcycle oil, I just discovered that it virtually eliminated the oil weep on the head gasket of my cb650.
