soaking the carbs in Coke.
then some simple green and warm water.

ive had great luck with that in the past.

the carbs were not as bad as i thought that they would be.

soaked them and coke for a few days.
then cleaned them with simple green and some warm water.

worked great

one of the float bowl overflow tubes has some damage at the base.
I think ill be able to fix it with alittle marine tex or JB weld

plan is to polish the top rings and bowls.

since everything else is out or in some other limbo i started in on the gauges.
got them split and ready for new faces and cleaning.
Im not sure if ill run a stock face or something different with LEDS......

where have people gotten faces from?

still polishing stuff......

cleaned all the parts of the gauges and waiting on my factory faces to come in for them.
sanded and painted the gauge cases.

A member here Lecram makes them.
he has listings here and on ebay.
they ship from overseas

they are GREAT in person
hell the pics still has a protective film on them....

I'll dig uP the threads latter but if you search for face replacement a bunch of stuff comes up

I used a fork to gently pry the needles off

Dont dig up the old threads-was just wondering if you had anything to add that you found while doing the replacement.

I used 2 spoons at the same time on opposite sides of the needle shaft and popped it off.

i was wondering about the needles too before i got them all apart.
like i said i used a fork to pry them up.
the whole disassembly of the gauges was not that hard it just take your time and go slow so you dont damage anything

The hardest part was trying to crimp the ring back down without denting the top of the ring. I put some electrical tape on the ring so to not damage it or mess up the paint from the ring moving around. I had thought about taking a Dremel and cutting some slots in the bottom of the ring where you crimp it back on. Would be easier to do it that way and the cuts would not be seen.

I used a pliers with electrical tape on it so the grooves on the pliers would not make marks in the ring. And I covered the ring with the tape too. Still left some slight marks, but concourse is not what I was after.

Yah, just go a bit at at time and work your way around it. You will not get it as flat as it was, but that will be good enough. I heard of a guy that made a flat chuck for his drill press. He made a piece of wood with a hole in just short the size of the ring. Then slide the speedo through the hole and used the drill press handle to push down the ring. Sounds like that would work good too.

I did similar after trying without a jig which stretched the rings so I got some scrap clocks to have another go. I took some 10mm alloy plate about 6" square and bored it out to just clear the painted gauge case then I machined a rebate to the same depth and diameter as the stainless ring. When I levered the ring it didnt stretch as the od was restrained. Once I reassembled it was easy to mount the plate in a vice then build up the clock face down I placed a steel bar across the back of the clock then clamped each end of it to the alloy plate with G clamps. I then gently peened the stainless ring down. Worked well and no visible damage at all.

Appreciate this requires a lathe but it wouldnt take a machine shop much effort to knock one up and makes life easier.

got the gauges back together. and im very happy with how they came out.
the rings got alittle dinged up but im ok with it as this bike is going to be a rider and not a show bike.
do plan to get new chrome backs and trim for them.

finished both gauges.
the little chrome ring got alittle beat up while going back together but for what i want to do with the bike it will work great.

will need new chrome backing plates to match the new faces....

also need to clean up the lights for the gauges

also started to clean up some of the motor parts

found a nice gift for the bike while cleaning up in the shop

and need to find someplace new to have my frame powder coated.

anyone know of someone in NY?
ill be on long island next week and i go to school 15 min from Canada so really almost any where in NY would work
