Hmmmm? Over 70 views and no one has commented on it. I guess everyone is a stumped as I am?

S.W.A.G. ......maybe some kind of expanding plug ???

my guess would be an expanding type rubber plug to take the place of a stripped out threaded plug?  (shrug)

+1 ask around for another pan. 

The easy fix is to have the hole retapped to the next larger size and always use a torque wrench to tighten the plug.

Perhaps the po wanted to install an aftermarket thread-in oil temp sensor and that's the sending unit?

Who knows?? Gotta love those mystery mods  ;)

I looked at that thing a couple of times and just couldn't focus on it. But an expanding plug makes sense.

Which can only beg the question, have you changed your oil?

That's what I was thinking. Some kind of sending unit. Oil Temp or Oil level? My K5 doesn't have one but I know the K8 is a different beast.

Talked with my local wrench today and it seems my first thought was correct.

It's an automotive expanding rubber plug for stripped drain plug holes. Some PO apparently ruined the threads and this was the "solution" he came up with.


Guess I'll be looking for a good used pan this winter........along with all the other things I plan to fix/replace during the off season. ::)
