Any idea on where to get some highway bars/Engine guards?
« on: August 03, 2010, 08:40:08 PM »
The subject says it all...for a 1975 CB750 K5...I keep looking around and have only found a few places the carry some "universal fit" ones.  I keep scaling through craigslist in my area (DFW) but nothing ever pops up...

Are you thinking about the one that is about 28"x14" with the footpegs mounted to the inside?  I have two off a 76 and 78 CB750F.  One has the removable top bar to fit through a windjammer bracket and I am keeping that one.  This one also has the flip up rubber pegs.  The one available came off the 76F, the pegs are  a chrome section of tube with a stud welded on one end to thread into place.  No rubber, no flip up but all in decent shape.  Send me a PM if interested.

There are highway bars and there are engine guards. Highway bars come in 2 flavors. Just a straight metal, sqhaure stock or often square stock that's been twisted, with footpegs on the ends of it. this clamps to the downtubes with U clamps. These are primary "highway pegs" to put your feet up on put double as engine guards in that if you tip over, the bar may hold the engine covers off the ground. Give a good shock to the frame however. Usually called simply highway pegs. Comfortable for feet long distance, if you don't mind the wind up your pantsleg.

Then there is the hoop variety often called crash bars, with footpegs mounted. I think this is what srust is referring to. They mount to the frame down tubes with uclamps at the top and to the lower front engine bolt.

Then there are engine or case guards. These mount close up to the alternator cover and the points cover. They mount to the lower engine mount bolts. Some have footpads on them, but your feet will foul with the covers as they are so close. Not real practical, but gives you an alternate place for your feet occasionally.

I bot my last set of case guards sans pads from eBay. The finish was bad so I had them powdercaoted for about $12 each, to the frame color. You could have them powdercoated to a "chrome" paint color again for a LOT less than real chrome. Total about $50. Retail if you can find them is $100+. Yamiya has the case guards in glorious chrome for something north of $300.

I guess what I have on there right now is some very simple engine(D shaped) guards without footpegs...I guess I am not totally sure what I want...I just would like to have some pegs up front where I could kind of stretch out while cruising the backroads...right now I feel like I am riding an overpowered dirt bike in the stance that I am sitting :-)

So you've got the engine covered. Consider making a set like I described at first. Just a straight bar, square stock with some ends on it, U bolted to the 2 down rails. With pegs, or without, just some straight stock sticking out to put your feet on. You could quickly take it off when on tour.

Here's a side shot of the hoop style MCRider was referring to:

This is on a 550, but looks the same as on the 750.
