Hondaman ignition: Where do I mount this thing?
« on: June 04, 2010, 11:23:27 AM »
Super stoked for my new transistor ignition from our very own Hondaman, but I haven't got a clue where I'm going to put this box.
Bike is a '76 cb750f. Anyone have any ideas? Proud owners, where did you mount yours?

I put both of mine between the battery box and the rear fender.

I am very curious about this ignition...I have read that it does not totally replace the coils and points and condensers...what exactly does it do? I'm guessing it make your timing way better...but how? (Yes I should search)

My experience with it has been great. My bike,75 750k, improved immediatly. I wires in & uses the points as triggers to fire the ignition, but the points do not actually fire anymore.

Think of the module as a solid state relay or as an ignition amplifier.  A small trickle of current is sent through the points (small current means little to no wear) while the module itself does the heavy lifting of firing the coils.

Here is where I mounted mine.  I have the "kill switch" option, so it needed to be externally accessible yet hidden.  Painted it black, tie-wrapped it to the frame behind the electrical panel.  Had to notch my aftermarket side cover to make room.

Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Mine lives hanging under the battery box with a couple of strips of DuPont tape. It needs to be close enough to all the points it connects to.

to all of you who put them in or around the battery box, did you have to run more wire?  My HM ignition will barely reach half way to the battery box.   Am i missing something?

mine's in the toolbox and I remember it being a bit a bit of a stretch getting to the points and the grren wire just plumb wasn't long enough - I had to add a few inches to it. Hope that helps.

You're probably not aware that the junction of the points wires on your bike is at the top right rear of the engine, on the side of the frame. This is where the YELLOW/BLUE/ORANGE/VIOLET ignition wires plug into the points. The long BLACK wire goes up to the coils under the tank, and the GREEN one follows those points wires down into the points plate, where it MUST be grounded. Use a condensor screw, it fits the ring terminal tightly.  ;)

In the early units, the GREEN wire was about 3" shorter: this was made 5" longer on all units after September of last year. If the box was oriented with the wires pointing to the left of the bike, or in the toolbox on 750 bikes, the GREEN wire came up a little short. The original mounting location was intended to be under the battery box, hence the shorter wire. On some of the above-named bikes, especially the 750F/K7/K8 and 550F, the PVC breather is enough in the way that the box was tough to squeeze in down there.  :)

Hey HMan,

Thanks for that.  I went back and re-read your handy-dandy installation instructions.  I fail reading comprehension 101, but luckily you also provided a nice chart my brain likes.

Turns out i did have it installed wrong.  I hooked the blue and yellow to the wireharness, not the points plate  :-X   I went back and fixed the problem (which if i had thought about it for a second i should have known better), but still, my orange and violet wires were a bit short (they are connected to the coils which i think is right).  The main culprit was the orange by about 3-4 inches.  I added an extension to both, and now i have more than enough slack to put it anywhere.  Thanks again.

Ummm...now you have ME confused.  ???
The points wires junction at the top right rear of the engine, to both the coils (going up) and the points (going down). You can just unplug those BLUE and YELLOW wires from each other there. Then the mating BLUE and YELLOW from the Ignition plugs into the ones headed toward the points, and the ORANGE plugs into the YELLOW headed up to the (right) coil and the VIOLET plugs into the BLUE headed up to the (left) coil. That way, should you decide to switch it out on the side of the road, it's just "unplug the Ignition wires and plug the points back into the coils", out in plain sight. You don't need to remove the tank, then.  ;)

(I'm too lazy to do that sort of thing roadside.  ;D )

<- Wins dense award for the week.

I am finally picking up what you are putting down Mark (took a while i know, sorry)....The blue and yellow wires at the coils are the same ones coming down to the points (i am the slow kid sometimes)........ so, if i hook it up over by the rear break/ points plate (shakes again at idiocy) I have a TON of slack to play with and would not need to remove the tank if the magic box lost its magic.

Thanks again for putting up with my dumb questions.
