Topic: New here and just got a '77 750

So I had been lurking for a few days, then decided to join.  Been lurking for another few days trying to read as much as I can and see others projects.  Definitely found a lot of tricks and design elements that I like.

The 750 I picked up from a friend of a friend, sort of.  Long story but I got it for $150.  The guy kept telling me the engine was still strong but I wasn't believing it.  The kick starter does...kick, but nothing really happens.  I do plan to do a full resto/build from the bare frame.  I've never done anything like this so I think it will be fun.  I did "build" (quotes because all I really built was the seat bracket and painted it) a bobber from a Nighthawk 250 and I really enjoyed it.  I want to get real serious and try to fabricate a lot more parts and possibly rebuild the engine.

My inspiration is definitely the Gorilla Punch Wrench Monkees bike.  Lots of features on it that I really like.  I plan on trying to fab a tank similar to what it has and a matching seat pan.

I'm still organizing my garage so I haven't done anything except pull the tank, seat and rear fender.  I do plan to document everything I do and include a lot of pictures; I know that's the best part of forums like this, sharing .  Plus I think I have some great ideas for some, what I think will be, trick one-off parts.

Going out of town this weekend so I started cleaning my carbs tonight.  I was reading up on the ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight on here so I went and bought one.  Got one carb apart and started cleaning it.  It was pretty clogged up in the bottom bowl, I will probably need to run it through again (only did it for 14 minutes) and probably brush it some.

I bought something similar to the first choice for my 250, but I don't know if it was needed.

Also, I noticed I'm missing a piece out of the carb I cleaned (see picture).  Is that available to buy anywhere?

Ordered the gasket only kit, my metal bits look fine. Just need to locate that missing piece.

I also just checked my frame and engine numbers and they don't match...  Oh well.

Welcome, you're off to a good start!

The frame and motor numbers do not match on these old Hondas.

Post a thread for the carb part you need, someone has one they will sell you for cheap [or buy a spare rack].

A couple of quick notes:
Check the forum for downloading the service manual, you can identify if the part's missing or not.
Check out http://www.motogrid.com, in th service section you can pick your exact bike and check the microfiche. Once you have a part number, go back and search for it, it might be on multiple years/classes.
Last, engine numbers and frame numbers don't match, but they do relate. Check this out http://www.hondachopper.com/engine/engine_timeline/timeline.html

I tried looking up the part on that motogrid site but it did not show it.  It is definitely missing as all the other carbs have both pieces (you can see them in the pic I took before disassembly).  I will try to post up in the wanted section to see if someone has one.

i do believe what you are missing is an air jet may need a different carb body i dont know if you can get them by themselves.

I was sort of afraid of that, but that's ok. There is a Jap bike junk yard right by me. I'm sure they have something.

Ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight.  At first I didn't think it did much, but I think it was because I over filled it.  I put in the shaft that runs through the top of the carbs and I could see the dirt vibrate off.  Pretty cool.

And I just picked up the soda blaster from there.  Going to test it on the carb bowls this weekend.

Finally got around to using the soda blaster.  It's pretty cool, it looks really cool too.  I will be looking to get a blast cabinet now because it does get everywhere, so I just did the one bowl for now.  I need to get a new funnel too, the hole is too small for the one I have.

This was a quick job, really just testing the system out.  I'm happy with the results so far.









But that's all for now.  Have to install base boards...
