Fuel Petcock tube length?
« on: February 22, 2006, 10:23:22 AM »
Tank and side panels are being painted this week on my 1978 CB550K, I removed the petcock for the first time and noticed the white tube the inserts into the tank is about 1.25 inches long. Thought it looked kinda short....I figured this was for the reserve fuel  feature....What length should it be?

Did not see a filter screen on it either.....just a piece of hard white tubing. Where would the screen be?

sounds to me like someone (PO) cut it short - usually the tube is about 3 inches long and forks into a filter spreader at the top, kind of four little legs that stick up to keep the filter material from collapsing around the hole.

i wouldn't sweat it if i were you - put an inline filter in it after the petcock.

I would try to find the correct filter sock that goes to the petcock. It will reduce the wear to the valve itself plus extra filtration to the carbs. This is in addition to the inline filter that Junkie suggests.

Anyone have a good source or cheap makeshift replacement for the in tank filter (something from the autoparts store or home depot)?  I'd like to have both that and the inline filter.

The PO told me straight to my face when I bought it that when he lined the tank, he didn't know what the tube or screen was for so he threw them away.  ::)

Yeah, that tube is a little short, which just means you have less reserve. The screen for the in tank filter is in the tank and doesn't come out with the petcock. I have the same bike. When you get the tank back, look inside the tank where the petcock attaches, you should see the screen. Put an inline filter on your bike as well, you can't have gas that's too clean.

What size inline filter should I buy? Looked a fuel line...no markings on it for size? Which is better?...One with a removable filter for the long haul...or a small wafer style that are tossed out when dirty?
