CB550 4 into 2 exhaust build
«
on:
August 27, 2010, 11:12:37 AM »
I decided to jump in and post my exhaust build for my CB550. I have built a few exhausts over the years for my 305 Super Hawks and CB350Fs. I decided to try a 4 int 2 this time instead of 4 into 4 that I have done on my 350Fs. I started off by getting a set of head pipes right here from the for sale section. A big thanks to DelbT for selling me the pipes. Then I mounted them to see what kind of clearance issues I was going to have. #1 pipe doesn't hang as low as the others, for side stand clearance I presume, so I had to cut a kerf and bend it down a bit.

Now that I had my head pipes close enough to make a 2 into 1 connection, I ordered my parts. I get my stuff from Cone Engineering in CA. Good prices and service, I've never had a problem with them. I ordered cones, baffles, collectors and packing.

I test fitted the collector and it looked like it would work out fine.

I decided to try some old CB450 brackets I had for mounting the meg. Looks like they will work!

I'll cut the bottoms off and weld it to the meg.

I went to making up the baffles. This was a new venture for me as I usually just use a couple of stepped reducing washers in the meg which has always worked for me. I decided to try baffles for noise reduction.

I went ahead and wrapped them in stainless steel wool.

I hand hammer the reverse on the end of the meg. I just put a dolly in the vise and beat on it.

Before you start pounding you need to cut a notch for the metal to fold without binding.

This is what it looks like first time around the horn. Not pretty but it will get better.

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

You need to drop in your baffle before you get too far into the pounding. If you go too far you won't be able to drop the baffle in. Don't ask me how I know.
If you do just pound the other way to open it up.

After I get where I want on the vise mounted beating, I remove the dolly and use it and hammer free hand to smooth the end into a decent round.

I'm thinking this is the angle I will mount the megs. I will post more as time and progress allow.

After checking axle, shock and swing arm clearance and symmetrical appearance I tacked stuff together. I'll weld everything up and check the exhaust on a running bike. I like that I don't have to remove the exhaust to pull the axle and drop the wheel.

Thanks for posting this, I just posted the start of my 750k8 project and am torn between building the 4into 4 CR style race mega's or the 2 into ones like you are doing. If yours turn out nice I am probably going the 2 into one route. I am going to fab my own down tubes however using a cheapo tubing roller from harbor freight. I want to get those large radius bends that come from hand bending like the YOSHI's. I love how you did the silencers, what did you use for the swiss cheese tubes? thanks again, James

James, Thanks for the positive comments. I got my baffle materials from Cone Engineering.

It's hard to beat a 4 into 4 set-up. It sounds great and looks mean from the rear. Let me know how things go, especially using the Harbor Freight tube bender.

Man i like that. I have a set of 550 headers hanging in my garage. The sure beats the heck out of buying benjies $850 exhaust.

Well, I finally got time to get them hooked up for a test at idle. Sounds good, but really won't know anything until I get the bike running under a load and read plugs. File size too large to post so put on you tube.

Took it out on the road and bike runs well, no bogging and pulls nicely. I'll get some distance in next and pull the plugs. One thing to note I had to weld a little stop on the left side to keep the center stand out of the chain.

That looks awesome! How much approximately did you spend on the pieces you purchased? Do you plan to paint them or something else?
