I've seen some nice bolt kits on line.
First, I'll start with ...I just hate the Phillips head bolts. I just want Hex.
I'll probably do stainless, but I must say that the Aluminum Red anodized Bolts would look really cool on my black covers.
So...Which ones are the most complete, best deal etc.?
That said...Here are my Choices:

http://www.cyclexchange.net/Coming%20Soon%20Page!.htm
Scroll down to see bolt selection.

I have also seen what look to be decent kits on ebay as well.

Here is the kit I plan to buy, it is from alloy boltz, but cheaper than your link above.

Well I started pulling the engine apart a bit more (I STILL can't get those damn carbs off -my gut or my bike).
As Pulled the sprocket cover off on the left where the chain attaches...I found a mud dauber wasp nest about the size of a salt shaker. It was dried up / abandoned, but there was a MESs of crud around that sprocket.

I'll be replacing the old chain to. Its "functional", but I would bet its about two short rides from garbage and an injured leg.

I DID actually get that bolt kit from ALLOY BOLT on Ebay. It came in Friday  and man...what a great deal! ITS PERFECT.

I also got word from the seat upholsterer that the seat arrived intact and I'll be looking forward to that over the next few weeks as well.

Been staring a HOLE in THIS for about a week now:

I mean the exhaust of course.

Just some thing very meaty and cool about it. I love that tapered end pipe too.

I was originally looking at their 4-2-1 which is still up in the air...

Of course when I say "they I'm refering to Cycle X.

I spoke w/ the owner Ken a few days ago and he was very friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful as well.
I will definitely get the bulk of by bitz from them. Namely the Black on Black shocks, chain, Drag Bars and exhaust.

Getting a couple small things from Lowbrow Customs. I may end up getting the fenders (if I decide to use any at all) from Carpy. I like his bobbed rear fender and a few other small odds and end. The one I'm up in the air about because I don't really need it- I JUST like the look -is that Dresda swingarm. Ijust like it. maybe after the damn things running i'll go back and swap it out.

I just got the skinny in the tech-tips section for those of you that don't already know. If you plan to use Stainless Steel Bolt kits (like I am) make sure you use an anti-seize on them before you put them in. It will help you in the long run.

Well, got my anti-sieze. Picking up a cheap engine stand from ...well haven't decided where. There are so many. seems like any of them will do though.

Also Decided to get some parts powder-coated. The frame will have to be last as that is going to be the most expensive at $300.

Need color/painting advice
« Reply #32 on: January 15, 2011, 07:12:51 PM »
Well, got the engine out and on a hoist. Its resting peacefully of a padded backrest of an old chair. Dont worry..There will be some pics coming in a later post...

MY MASTER PLAN FOR PAINTING THE ENGINE IS THIS:

I am getting these parts powder coated (at least on one side anyway):

Left side:

Alternator cover

Gear Shift cover

Sprocket Cover

Right side:

Clutch Cover (not the round bit, but the actual cover behind it)

Under the seat:

Battery tray & tool tray

Top side:

Valve cover

Underside:

Oil Pan

Misc (to be done at a later time)"

Rims

Hubs

Frame

Triple trees

My idea is this...I get the covers done and then re-assemble and carefully mask off the powder coated bits and then hit the rest of the engine w/ black engine paint...

Please tell me what you think of this idea.

I'm also not sold on the idea of the actual engine color and I even thought that a different  color all together might look cool because I'm pretty sure the engine paint won't exactly match the powder coated parts which will all be black.

So, do I paint the engine:

Black?

Red? (uhm...)

Stock metal (silver)?

Gun metal?

or Some other color...

Help me decide folks!

I want my wiring to look like that!! Is it possible to use water in a tube instead of a copper wire? THAT would be cool, a bunch of clear tubes running off the battery.

No...I would think that would be scary and impractical. I will say this though...As I mentioned before....I will be re-sleeving ALL of my wiring in a similar fashion and I will in fact be using clear red fuel line that looks just like the tubes in the pictures you are referring to. (those in the pics are actually cooling the GPUs and CPUs with liquid and they route to a radiator). I'm also using red-cloth covered Sparkplug cables.

Any opinions on the questions I posted above though?

Build is looking good. Thanks for all the pics. Food for thought.... I am to in the market for an exhaust system and have been drawn to Cycle X. I was seriously considering the Sidewinder headers and cone exhaust. After some forum searching and asking around I discovered those headers are Vance & Hines brand, made for the CB750 DOHC and made for drag bikes. Apparently they can be modified to fit the SOHC but they are pretty bulky on the right side and will scrape on a right hander. If you like to hit the twistys like I do then these are probably just not the best choice due to ground clearance issues. I have decided to get the Cycle X 4-2-1 race system instead. I do agree however that the side winder does look sweet!

Get some Gunk Foamy Engine Cleaner [$5] from your local auto parts store, it works great.

Kong started a thread on engine colors, click below.
If your covers will be black, it may look better with a contrasting color.

It needs some more shots of clear and a good buffing/polishing.

I might add a white pinstripe between the red and black as well.

Meh..maybe I'll just stick the black exhaust on (although I did see one w/ the reverse megaphone tip on it too?...) and paint the case black and call it a day.

Actually....does the engine case NEED to be painted at all? does it HAVE to have some kind of coating?

OK. Today I had the following powder coated 100% Gloss Black:

Lower forks
rear Swing arm (and that long thin Stabilizer Bar )
Battery Tray
Tool tray
Triple trees
Alternator cover
Gear shift cover
4 color light indicator/Handle Bar Clamp
Clutch Cover (the actual engine cover -Not the little tin round cover on top of it)
Valve Cover (including the Breather box)
I also did the two triangular motor mount pieces in Bright Glossy red powdercoat (why the hell not).

So far I'm in for $210 for the listed stuff above and the two motor mount pieces. I don't know if this is too much or a low price, but it seemed fair enough for the amount of work. They are also media blasting everything of course before the prep and application and the baking.
...and they DID help me get the damn Lower forks separated from the fork tubes...what a PITA that was!

I didn't do the Sprocket cover piece 'cause I' m going to drill some holes in it first.

I  "almost certain" that I will be doing the same to the Rims...that still up in the air. Same goes for the hubs (likely polish those though) w/ polished spokes.

Later... I'll be getting the Sprocket cover done along with the Frame, Calipers and... I think that's it. O yeah...the fenders (or fender? Still looking for some)

I'll likely end up painting the rest of the engine DUPLICOLOR Gloss Black too...maybe silver? Still a toss up on that.

So...We are Down to BLACK or SILver on the engine color. OPINIONS?

OK...I 've decided on an engine color! I was just going to order one of The Architect's gauge adapter brackets and I was looking through his posts and I've always really like his engine color choice. (Hey Arch... If you read this-Where'd up get your indicator light Hex bolts?)

Any way. SO, I went out and bought some Duplicolor Cast Iron Engine Paint. I think it will look really good up against all of my black covers.

I got the forks off...ordered a new set of tubes and seals. Sent the triple Trees and lower tubes for powder coat.

Break Rotor Is Thick as a Thumb  (well..almost)

Sending it out this week to get cross drilled.

Speaking of Drilled...I did My Sprocket/chain guard today too!

And then I did a test shot of that Cast Iron Paint on it...I think its gonna look good.

Engine is looking cleaner too (almost there):\

I am sure it would only be if he did not disable the oiler.  Yanno, the oil seeping through the holes and cleaning it more often.  I have seen them with much larger holes and not even there.
