replacement handlebars??
« on: March 02, 2006, 07:51:14 AM »
Hey all,

need to replace the slightly bent handlebars on my stock '71  750.

which would be closest to OEM,  GP Touring bars or Euro Cafe style?

Looking at the ones available at Cycle re cycle,     http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/Index_Main_Frame.htm

any input is appreciated.

Estimating from the picture in the Honda motorcycle identification guide, the stock handlebar had a 3 to 4 inch rise.  Can't tell the width or pull back is maybe an inch more than the rise, and no way to estimate the width.

CRC doesn't give any dimensions on their site.  If you want to buy from them, I suggest you call for dimensions.

Sit on the bike and place your hands where it is comfortable while riding.  Measure and get bars that will put your hands in that position.  Make sure your cables, wires, and hydraulic lines are long enough reach the positions you've chosen.

when I had stock bars on my cb750 I used to get people asking me why I put mini-apes on my bike. When I switched to superbike bars I couldn't believe how many people thought they were the stock bars. Personally I think the bike just looks right with superbike bend bars on it. For 1971, know that you will have to convert your switches to external electrics or drill holes in the bars for the wiring.

The bars on my bike "look" as they might be what Honda put on their stock.
Atleast thats what people tell me.

When you pick out some bars, consider the type of riding you do also. If you do a lot of around town stuff, a little higher bar might be the way to go. If you do a lot of higher speed roadwork, lower bars work well as the wind pressure on your torso kind of balances out at speed. I really like drag bars, for me anyhow they work well.

I scored a set of stock bars on e-buy for $5, and they're in great shape.  They show up every now & again if you're not in a rush.  The ones that came with the bike were lower (~2" rise) and my back was complaining.  The stock set is a little higher (~4" rise) and flares back a bit more.  Seems to be a more comfortable fit for me, but it's a personal issue/choice based on you're physical size (6'-0), riding style (I putter around town) and you're bike (550).

I'm currently in the process of swapping them out, and getting the wires threaded back through is a monumental #$%*.  Anyone have any tricks?  Or if I finally give up and run the wires on the outside, how do you get them there?  The wires attach to the inside of the switches, set up to enter the holes in the bars.  How do you get the wires to the outside?

I used a Dremmel with a cutter wheel and cut a chunk out of the bottom halves of the switch housings. Ran the wire out of there and down the underside of the bar. I think that's how most do it.
