valve stem seals, rope trick?
« on: October 01, 2010, 01:17:11 AM »
Hey ,
I have read about this rope trick to replace valve seals without tacking the heads off. I need to do so with my 80 cb650. any tips?
Thanks ,
Alvin.

Answered in a PM. For forum digestion: I have done this. You'll need a tool like the last one in this list:
http://www.mytoolstore.com/kd/kdengi13.html

I set each cylinder at TDC compression stroke in succession. This puts the piston at the top and holds the valves in. They will drop a fraction of an inch when the spring is removed. Swap the seals. Reinstall the springs, may need a magnet to pull the valve up to tippy top to put the cotters back in. Can't remember for sure. Biggest memory was that it wasn't a hard thing to do.

I had a frame rail kit, so did it in frame in a few hours.

Move on to the next valve. Remember one cylinder at a time. Set the engine at TDC COMPRESSION stroke.

The rope trick works by feeding the rope into the cylinder through the spark plug hole.  It fills up the combustion chamber and prevents the valve from falling in.  You can also do the same with an air compressor and an adapter from a compression tester that threads into the spark plug hole.  The compressed air keeps the valves tight in their seats.

By rope trick I thought he meant just a mystical way of doing it. Now that you mention it I remember others speaking of stuffing the cylinder with rope. Also, in googling the whole procedure, with the car guys using air is common, there are spark plug hole adapters for this very purpose.

But following my procedure requires neither. Though I wouldn't tell someone not too.

That's how David Copperfield would do it!

A large silk sheet, a lovely assistant in a sequined bikini, and a length of rope. 8) ;D ;D

If you do use air you still need to have the piston at top dead centre otherwise it will try and turn. 10psi is all that is needed to hold the valves up. A leakdown Tester is an ideal tool for adjusting the air pressure. This method works well. Pat
