1975 CB550F parts ID
« on: October 03, 2010, 02:43:30 PM »

So, I’ve been slowly taking apart my $500 CB550F and I’m beginning to think maybe I didn’t get the better end of this deal.  It just seems awfully cobbled-up.  For instance, look at this front shock.  I don't think its original and neither did another member.  Looking at the shock the end is ground up for some reason and it looks like there is a hex bolt in the end of it.  Does anyone recognize these shocks?

Then there are the breather pods, the two inner seat fine but the two outer will hit the frame so it looks like the previous owner rigged up some sort of 90° pvc pipe to miss the frame or could this have been part of a kit.  How does one miss the frame with these pods?

thanks
vic

How does the bike run? There are many stories out there about how difficult it can be to tune these CB's with the "pods" on.
You may want to consider putting the stock airbox back on.

The forks like like they came from an early 80-'s Honda Silverwing. They were air forks and the PO capped them, there was a hose between each fork. That pod set up is unbelieveable, either get short pods or convert back to the standard air box.  good luck with the project, Larry

I haven't got to the running stage yet! I bought it with the understanding I needed to fix some leaks, leaky tank, leaky petcock, leaky carbs, you know.  I've a tank coming, I can put new kits in the carbs, the filter portion of the petcock is MIA and the lower half I cleaned up and the rubber needs to be replaced.  Now If I can find replacement parts...

If replacement parts are this hard to come by perhaps I should look into finding a tank with easier to find parts.

I have had no trouble finding replacement parts for my 550F, but you have to search and know what your looking for.
Look on this forum, eBay and locally at your Honda dealer [but some parts are no longer available new].
Keep in mind that they only made the 550F for three model years and there was a change in the petcock.
Keep looking and post a "part's needed" thread on this forum, the parts are out there!

My "new" tank showed up today. It fits perfectly but its different.  The gas cap is on the righthand side and the petcock screws into the tank with 2 screws on the left.  Is this the "other" tank?

If someone could ID it I'd be happy because I still need a petcock and now a gas cap.  It would be nice to know where to start looking!

thanks

Sounds like a "K" tank, do you have a pic?

I am pretty sure it is a "K" tank.  The petcock for that tank is much easier to find, so thats good.  I have the "K" tank on my 550f, but I also have a custom seat.  Have you tried to see if the seat fits with that tank?
