1982 cb650...."The Divorcer"
« on: October 26, 2010, 05:26:04 AM »
Grab a beer and sit down. I have a story to tell. I was 14 was a friend of the family gave me their old 1982 cb650. That was my first cycle. I slowly started restoring with the help of my dad. We de-rusted the tank, clean the electronics up, and "I" pulled the carbs and cleaned them. I was so proud of my self. I took my time to get it all right. Soaked them in some junk i cannot remember now, slowly put them back together, and put them on the bike. (Just you know, it did start b4 i did that to the carbs, there was bad build up on the bottom of the bowls). I filled the tank with gas, sat down on the bike and begain to start it. Just in case a bowl was stuck i put a rag under the carbs to catch gas. I fired it up and got it running. Back firering and spitting and sputtering she was,,, but she ran. Then I smelled GAS!!!! Looked down between my legs and sure enough, carb 2 was pouring gas out. Before i could get off the bike it backfired, the gas caught FIRE, started burning the old eletrics, some how went up to the gas tak. I yanked the tank, tossed it out on the driveway (beside my dad's NEW truck, and just to add the bike was sitting be side a 1976 "Stingray Corvet"). All the while the bike was still on fire. Ran got the hose finally put out both the tank and bike. I was devestated! Sold the bike for $50 a week later. 2 weeks after that the "friend" I sold it to drove up to the house on it telling me how great a bike it is. I still hate him to this day....

Wow...that back tire looks smooth as a baby's butt!  ;D ;D

Great find - you have your work ahead of you.  Here's hoping round two is more fulfilling than round one (But then again, round one got you a love for these bikes that never left...)

Keep us updated - I'll be watching.

???Ok....went to see if it turns over..the starters  froze.  Took it apart and Worked it out a little bit with WD40..got it unstuck..put it back in...I can hear it spinning inside but it is not turning the motor over ???

Do these starters go out and engage and then retarck or dis-engage like a car starter?

The motor isn't froze...i put it in gear and rocked it back and forth and it turns....

It's certainly possible that the starter is stripped out - either on the gear teeth where it meets the engine, or the shaft itself internally.

You dont need to split the cases.  Just did one.  About halfway down the page you'll need the post from Buber (sp?).    Pretty simple really.

Yeah, I didn't think of that.  From what i understand, it's not uncommon on our 650s - in fact, it was done to mine right before I got it.  Because of that, I have a spare s-clutch just in case.

I still don't know what direction to go with it..right now goal is to get it running clean then i'll decide...

(Starter Clutch) Any advice for a good company that sells them?

I checked both gears, one on the starter and the other in the case, Neither one is stripped.. so i'll go for the starter clutch. I was wondering about that because i can move the gear in the case with little force from my finger. Is that normal?....

Either way, i am collecting the stuff for a home built soda blaster to get the carbs clean. right now I am looking for an average air compressor, and acutally that is the last thing i need!!

No the 84 was a dual cam.  It might be the same but doubt it.  Most people include the 82 (single cam nite hawk) With the other cause they dont know better.

This is some info i got from bikebarn.com

ALL CB650 from years 79-85---the same starter clutch will fit. They have one for $140 (new and a litte steep for me).
If they are wrong that is an 140 mistake...I am going to call around to see if this matches up.

To my knowledge... engine wise... '79 to '82 CB650's are the same with regards to everything below the Head.  The Carb Spacing changed between '80 to '81 as they moved to the CV carbs.

If your really questioning... go to a place like www.hondapartsnation.com and look up and cross reference the part your looking for (ie. find the PN and then do a search for the PN to see what all models it fits).

so i finially got time yesterday to dig into this thing....here is what i found out

....Tank is rusted so I let my fender sit in some rust remover to test it out before putting it in the tank....results

Then i droped the oil pan to get an idea

no metal except for this....

i assume it came fromt the starter clutch

and from the looks of it...it has been worked on b4

other things noticed just by fiddleing with them....clutch, front brake, CARBS, ignition, lights,,,and decideing to either build a cafe or bobber!

I am taking out the starter clutch right now!

Do I need to take off all the c-clamps on the shaft

-Does all the metal plates (the ones conncted to the gear shifter)need to come off to get the shaft out. I am at a stand off and don't know where to go from here.

;D easy peasy! Got it.....the three bolts holding the clutch together was stripped. So once the shaft was out it just fell apart.

I'll post pics and my process of pulling it tomorrow...

CB650 was right....stick it out..it'll come!
