CB550 grounding point
« on: November 03, 2010, 01:36:47 PM »
I recently brought home a non-running 1975 CB550K1.  I bought a battery and while examining the battery box on the bike I realized that the negative battery cable is missing in its entirety.  The thing is just not there.  So my question is, once I source/make a new cable, where on the frame does it attach?  From what I've read and seen, it should bolt to the frame near the upper right motor mount.  Does it attach to one of the bolts holding the motor mount/clutch cable plate?  You'd think there would be a picture of this on the internet somewhere but dang if I could find it.

And speaking of the clutch cable, should it run between #3 and #4 air box boots?  Mine is routed to the outside of #4 and it destroyed the #4 boot.

Thanks,
John

you can ground it anywhere to a clean part of the frame.... i think however if it  is like the 78 the ground is pinched between the rear brake switch holder and the frame..... but as long as you have a clean or bare spot on the frame any point is ok

The starter motor current is the biggest draw.  So, you want a good short connection to the engine case.  The brake switch, clutch mount bracket is where most CB550s host the battery negative cable.  That part is wedged between the motor case and frame.

The clutch cable does go between the 3 and 4 air box boots
