Seat Locked
« on: March 13, 2006, 06:22:01 AM »
OK, I goofed.  I put my seat back on my 1975 CB550 and forgot the key was laying in the tool tray.  I locked the seat and I have no other key. I just bought this bike and am restoring it. Can anyone help me in telling me how to get it open wlithout major surgery?

Thanks for any help.

OMG!   i never thought of doing that, but i guess i'll be more careful.  i guess you could try to wiggle a magnet around the top of the tray.  if that doesn't work, drill out the bottom of the tray cause you can always get another tray.

good luck, bro. ;)

I have no other key.

Assuming this is the same key for ignition/fork lock/seat, etc. Get the number off the ignition switch, and then try Hondakeys.com to see if you can get another. Simple solution if it works and you will have a spare key to boot.

I got a spare key for my 750 from a motorcycle wrecking yard. The first one he pulled out of the box. Of course, I had the key with me at the time and could compare it, so ... never mind.

I'm not too sure if you bike seat is the same as mine (78 550).
But, this is what I did.

I took the hinge pins out - took a flash light, flat screwdriver, and a bunch of time.
Once the pins were out, I lifted the hinge side of the seat about 2 inches.
Then took a wrench and slowly loosened the bolts holding the locking pin that is attached to the seat.

Presto - seat is off.

Mind you this is off a 550.
If the seat is completely different on a 750 - sorry, and disregard this post.

On my 350f I just unbolted the latch from the bottom of the seat. Should just be 2 nuts to take off. Takes a 10mm socket and an extension as I recall.

You can also remove the pins from the hinge and roate the seat to get your key out. It is scary easy.

You know,  I wouldn't necessarily suggest this, but I've never actually opened mine with the key.  It doesn't work.  I've always used a flat-head screwdriver.

It never worked so it never even occurred to me until I read this that the seat might actually have a real lock...
