Yoshimura ignition
« on: March 13, 2006, 03:00:11 PM »
Hey all, bit of a long shot but I'm wondering if anyone has come across a Yoshimura ignition for a 400f before? I picked this one up as a speculative buy for my 460/4

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=4613708626&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT

Unfortunately I haven't been able to get any further info about it from the seller, however I guess I can take the old screw marks as a starting point for the timing & strobe it from there- also there's 3 wires from it, blue, yellow & black, so I presume they are the two coils and a 12v input. The white bit at the top of it is a magnetic pick-up, while under the moulded insulation I can make out various electronic components including a small microprocessor, though whether or not I should leave the stock advance-retard unit in place is anyone's guess, I guess the strobe will explain that one too. As for a crank trigger, I guess I'll have to make something up, though as it needs to be placed inside the centre hole & that is only about 20mm diameter that could be tricky.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Cheers

I would guess a Dyna S rotor would work.

Looking at my Dyna plate I’d say it’s an early model and you can still get the rotor with the magnet …check your advance retard plate 333=2  and the 750 plate =1 I don’t know the number but it was fitted to later 400’s

Thanks, I hadn't considered it could be a Dyna system, I've not seen one of them before. Anyway I've emailed Dyna about it, will let you know the outcome.

Cheers

I got a speedy reply from Dyna..

Thank you for your interest in Dynatek ignitions. Unfortunately, this
is not a Dynatek ignition system. It may be an old Martek but I am not sure. I
do not think one of our rotors will work on it. If we can be of any further
assistance please feel free to contact us anytime.

Hmmm... and a Google for Marteks indicates that they look somewhat different. I guess I'll have to try making up a rotor, which could be a bit of an education.
