they are definitely a mass made shock imported from china but they look a bit beefier than the MDI shocks for the same price.

ok, so  check this guy out , he seems to be trying to pass these same $80 a pair shocks  posted as ohlins shocks by replacing the sticker and asking $400 for these. although it is not outright said they are, it is definitly implied. If you look closely at the markings on the shocks ,it has the same embossed logo.
Correct me if I'm wrong but, it seems a bit of a shady auction. >:(

ya, that's bull#$%*!  he's buying them cheap and trying to rip people off!!  i just sent him a message asking to see the box they came in and also to see the Ohlins documentation that should have come with them!  Lets see what they say to that!

I also flagged it for e-bay to investigate...  I can't stand when people try to do this #$%*!  some poor bloke might pay $400 for a pair of CRAPPY shocks!!

i just wrote him an email too.  told him that most of the people who build these bikes will not fall for that #$%* nor stand for it. Even tthough he doesn't list them as ohlins , its implied with showing the shocks the way he did and asking such a price for them. The guy I originally posted is reasonable at $80. sure there not top of the line but, have to be better than 35yr old originals. I hate shady people...drives me crazy..sometimes a swift kick in the nuts is in order  ;)

there's a thread somewhere i read, can't remember where...  someone bought a set of these "performance" shocks and found out they were total crap.  they tried upgrading them with some nice machine work, and it was like polishing a turd.  the seals blew out and oil changes ont hem for different performance characteristics did nothing.  the springs only get stiffer and bumpier the higher the adjusting screws go, and putting air in the schrader valve just blew out a seal.  i mean they DO look tits, but they are just good looking paperweights...

my philosophy is that of MANY others: if you want an $XX ride, buy a $XX shock!

I figured I would send the seller a question,too.

Have you asked Ohlin's legal department about putting stickers with their name  on your shocks?

I bought a pair on Saturday but seller says he's out of stock  ::)
I bought some of the red ones a few months ago and re-built them for my CB360
I haven't had any problems with seals yet and I have 110psi nitrogen in them.
I think if I had them on a heavier bike I would use higher pressure.
They work pretty good after rebuild
Valving is pretty basic, two shims for rebound and a spring loaded washer for compression.
I made new bottoms from 6061 (original and new 'heavy duty)

drilled and tapped a fill/bleeder hole to make them easy to reassemble

Your work looks nice on the bottom end.

How did you lock the shaft of the shock against rotation?

I bought a set of this and they worked fine for me. These shocks are rebuildable and affordable. You can argue all day long how good Ohlins are and you will be right. But on the other hand when you buy Ohlins or any other brand name motorcycle shock you (and me) are being ripped off.
How can it be possible that a set of Bilstein shocks for my car cost less than half of what an Ohlins rear for my bike will be?
Sometimes you get what you pay for, sometimes you get a lot less.  :)
Bottom line only a handful of bikes on this forum have enough performance to justify a set of $1000.- plus shocks; and even then there are less people with the balls to take the bikes to their limits. The progressive suspension shocks are more than enough for the rest of us. These affordable Chinese shocks give people that want a certain look on their bikes the possibility of having that without braking the bank. My .02c

True but why get a shock that does more than what you need? Do you need racing shocks if you do not race? if you only do average riding, you only need an average shock.

I found they were not too good 'out of the box'.
Zero gas pressure in one side and about 7psi in the other.
Second set I bought had 25psi both sides.
removed springs and could feel air in them
Changed oil, drilled some holes, made new bottoms and you can't feel them working (which is how it should be)
I made new alloy lock nuts to lock shaft to new bottom, they are just screwed on

What PJ said. The fact he felt the need to make parts, and modify parts, to make them work well says a lot.
0 pressure in one side, way too little in another.. means they aren't coming out tested of wherever they are made.

In any case, what is "too much"?
It's true I wont be spending a grand on any of my street bikes for rear suspension, but I'm glad I spend at least a few hundred. My street riding is somewhat 'spirited'. I do reach the top 10% of my suspensions abilities often enough that having poor shocks is.. well, dangerous.
I'd rather have a larger margin of safety for a couple hundred more bucks than "welp, guess I found the limits of THIS particular set of shocks" as I watch the bike travel away from me on it's side at accelerated speeds.

If you have a lathe, the experience, and the time to do what PJ has done, go for it. If not, I'd say pass.

PJ, you could always buy a few sets of these, do what you've done to them, and sell them for a couple hundred bucks. I'm sure with your modifications, they are at least on par with the non-rebuildable hagons, and have the ability to be rebuilt, and they have 'the look'.

And it's not just an 'ohlins' sticker on there...
No.

Are there any "decent" shocks out there for say $150-200? I'd pay that for some if PJ decides to buy a few sets and mod them.  ;D Let me know if you do.

Cheapo hagons are 205 shipped. THey work quite well, and can be made in about 4 different lengths, depending on what you are going for.
Springs and shocks are 'customised' to your bike, riding habits, weight, and passenger/luggage needs.

Like I said, these fleabay chinese shocks may be just fine after they receive the treatment PJ has given them.
No.

The reason bilsteins are half the price for your car is that they're quite a simple shock.  They have one valve rate inside and are pressurized.  There are no adjustability controls and you have another piece of suspension (torsion bar, coil spring, etc) to handle the other part of suspension.  On a motorcycle shock, especially a good one (I got my IKONS with full adjustability for $400) you have rebound and preload adjustments in a lightweight package.  Not to mention theres the rider tuned progressive coil spring as well...

I put a nice set of tuned bilsteins and flat rate springs on my mustang, and some decent leaf springs, I spent about $700 on everything!  So you can't say that a set of very basic shocks are half the price of cheap moto shocks and expect to compare apples to apples..

I friend of mine runs a guitar store and ten years ago his shop was filled with lots of different models, many from the US. Today, most everything he carries comes from China made, in may ways, to be exact replicas of American brands. When he gets a used USA made guitar in, it usually is priced five to ten times more than a new Chinese model make to look exactly like it. My friend did make an interesting comment, "The Chinese don't make crummy stuff, we just ask them to make crummy stuff."

The point is, if you're buying these $85 shocks that EVERYONE sells, know they're the same thing and while they may look ok the ride will probably suck. In this case, someone is selling shocks that say "OHLINS" all over them and they're not. That's fraud, even if he mentions in the ad that they're not.

In my case, I recently bought these:

but I was I shipped these:

The same crappy $85 shocks are now even showing up when something else is being advertised. That's bait and switch and the ebay seller says he doesn't take returns. I've reported him to eBay and PayPal.
