K8 Accellerator pump spring, where does it go?
« on: March 17, 2006, 07:05:53 AM »
Just tore down my K8 carbs and I noticed that the accellerator pump spring was located ON TOP of the rubber diaphram.

It seemed to me that logically the spring should go underneath the diaphram so that when the actuator arm hits the plunger the pump is activitated.  The way it was assembled prior to my tear down, if you pushed on the top of the plunger nothing happend as the spring was already pushing down the diaphram.

Was this a reassembly mistake by the previous owner?  It seems strange that the carbs ran OK before I decided to tear the bike apart even with the pump installed incorrectly...

Anybody know where exactly the spring should go in the pump assembly???

the spring goes on the top. It is to hold the diaphragm closed except when the rod is pushed. If it was underneath, the diaphragm would always be open.

Hi all
i just had the carbs apart on my K8 and the spring goes under the diaphragm.  The spring pushes the diaphragm up pulling gas into the accelerator pump,  then when you open the throttle up it pushes down on the accelerator pump forcing gas out into four brass tubes in each carb.

Rastus Bill has it right. The spring goes under the diaphragm as you're looking at the carb right side up.

I'm sure eldar was referring to the spring on top with the carbs upside down which is the position they would be in when screwing on the pump cover.

I figured as much but wanted to clarify it for hevykevy. Also, it was an opportunity to poke a stick at eldar. ;D

Thanks all for your responses!   ;D ;D ;D  I guess I should've described what was the top or bottom of the carbs for reference...I'll do that next time.

Now that I spent 2hrs reassembling everything and getting the airbox to actually fit in that oh so small space the float bowl is leaking and ANOTHER bowl screw appears to be stripped.  I swear, I use two fingers to tighten these screws and yet they strip out :(  >:( :'(

Well again, when you have such a reliable bike, you dont need to think about these things much!

The spring holds the diaphragm closed so it sits between the cap and the diaphragm. There is that good enough now! ::)
