Isn't resistance to corrosion the idea of chrome in the first place?  I thought the shiny look is just a byproduct.

yes, it also makes it stronger and firmer. that's why higher end tools such as as Snap-On are nickel plated.

It's those pine needles.  They trap moisture AND they contain an acid for a one-two punch.
