Team New England- Godzilla has left New England
« on: December 23, 2010, 08:31:34 AM »
This will be the thread to plan and co-ordinate the rides through the New England states (CT, MA, VT, NH and ME). Most likely pick up the relay item from Bobby R at the New York border and then it will find its way to the Canadian  border. More updates as the Relay Ride settles on dates in 2011. Keep checking back here for a timeline....

Suggestions for routes are welcome at any time ;) The more interesting (landmarks, scenic viewpoints etc) the better. Lets show the rest of the US just what they are missing  ;D

Get those SOHCs ready...

Andy (Team New England Coordinator).

Good news Robert!

You are very luck to have Rt 30 on your doorstep and the ride will definitley include your neck of the woods. You must know some pretty good passes as well. Looking forward to meeting you nearer the summer.

cheers

i do know a few mountain passes, ending near warren/sugarbush ski area.  the route getting there is fun too.  have spent all day in the passes, multiple routes.  from there up route 100 to pretty much anywhere.  any rough idea when the ride will take place?

Keene, NH here. Easy access to MA, VT, and only 2 hrs from the NY border.  Nice riding in any direction from here.

We are waiting for dates....but hopefully sometime between June -September.

Ill likely organise a run in any case in June if there is enough interest....I usually ride all over New England in the summer months. This past summer I got to Maine, New York, VT and NH.

I hate to admit that I can't commit to anything at this point, but I'd love to ride along.
In my opinion, you can't tour New England without including some part of the White Mountains.  The Kanc. is nice but not the only nice road, especially if you're not afraid of dirt roads.
Also, I feel you must include some part of the New England coast.  Notable towns in my region: Portsmouth, NH, Newburyport, MA, Wells, ME, etc.  Some nice routes near these towns.  I love 1a along the NH coast, but you gotta hit it at the right time to avoid traffic.
Of course, Maine has some great coast to offer, though I'm less familiar with the routes near the water.  If you get above Portland there are some nice places off of Rt. 1 like Friendship.  There are several great towns along Rt 1 all the way up the coast, but man that road can suck if you plan badly.
On a side note, I'm putting together a day ride from Portsmouth, NH, to roughly Plymouth, NH, following what would have been called the Province Road in the 19th century but is now just a collection of smaller roads through some pretty areas.  I could see including this if the New England tour was to need a route from the coast to the mountains of New Hampshire.
One more thing: I could offer up my dad's garage as a pit stop if anybody needed one.  I've got the basic SOHC4 tool collection including a Carbtune there.  We're just East of Concord.
I'll keep checking in here to see where you guys are at and if you need a local impression of a route or area feel free to contact me.

Hey Andy!

This is Bruce, the Michigan coordinator.  Since there isn't an Eastern Canada coordinator yet, Jerry has asked me to fill in.  I have a few riders for NB, QB & ON and a probable ON-MI handoff point. I know little about routes or photo ops in Canada, any ideas will be GREATLY appreciated!

Do you have any thoughts on a ME-NB handoff point?
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Hi Bruce,

Looks like Jerry has it covered for now. The hand off from NB-ME should be relatively straightforward as there are plenty of riders in ME. If no one is available then I always a enjoy ride up to the border. The whole of New England is covered ;)

I would suggest the Mount Greylock area of the Berkshires north to Route 2 in North Adams.  Route 2 is pretty awesome up there.  Especially the Florida MA section near the hairpin.

I can't commit to the the ride at this point but I offer my shop and tools for any en route needs to anybody passing through the Gloucester, MA area as well as a place to pitch a tent or possibly a couch to sleep on. I really hope I'm able to ride in this but my work situation leaves that hope hanging over my head like a carrot in front of a horse.

This is my official entry into the hat. I am in Brattleboro and I can ride anywhere with short notice.  I have a shop, skill and I might even have some extra parts like turn signals, levers or the like should evil gremlins bring your bike down to worm level.  I am also up for a group ride regardless of the involvement of a rally.  I suggest that the "IT" be taken the distance up RT. 100.  You don't get much more Vermont than that road.  Be sure to take 100A over to Rt. 4 as a side trip.  It has a brand new coat of black and has more curves than a fiddle.

Steam powered:  Rt. 9 is the road I take when I want to wake up.  It a good night run, too.  There's just enough passing lanes to keep it interesting.  I usually go as fast as I can until I get to Hogback.  Then I stop and take in the view.

Early/mid July perhaps?? I'm kinda guesstimating/alotting 2 months for each continental crossing. If we get there much into July we'll have to push a little harder maybe so we can cross over to the dark side and get our Canadian brothers well on their way. Hoping to conclude the little ride by the end of August due to potential seasonal weather concerns in the northern Rockies.

Im in for this one. Ill have one of the sohcs up and running by the time this ride comes around for sure. Manchester NH here, I should also have my shop space available in manchester if needed too. All the hand tools youd need to get back on the road and then some.
