1974 cb750 master cylinder
« on: December 26, 2010, 11:39:15 AM »
Good Day,

I am rebuilding the master cylinder on my cb750 and I have run into some trouble,  I can't get the piston set to come out of the piston housing.  The circlip (18mm) that sits on front of the 10.5 mm washer is what is holding me up.  How to i remove this clip without damaging the housing??

Thanx all

A cheap circlip tool can be found at most hardware stores! Two dental tools might get it. A few beers and some small nails?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

ok, thanks bender.  I am soaking it in break free now.  Give it another try in a bit.

You can worry it out with a standard circlip pliar. Even a couple of small screwdrivers.

The proper tool is a "master cylinder circlip pliar" duh.

Makes quick work of it.

Often the holes of the circlip are full of crud and you'll need to pick them clean so you can get the bits of the pliars into them.

Ok...the circlip is off, I ended up having to break it.  But the washer and piston set will not come out.  I ran a punch up the other side and popped it with hammer, but it still wont let go.  It doesn't appear to be so corroded that everything would be stuck.  Has anyone else run into this, any ideas??

You need to get all the crud and rust out of the end where the circlip was.  I use old dental tools and a pick.  After that soak with the concoction of your choice and it should tap out with a bit of heat. Good luck...Larry

Thanx.....I cleaned it with dental tools and have the cylinder up right with break free soaking into it right now.  It has been snowing and in the 30's all day, so I may bring it in from the shop to warm up.  Wont be able to get back at it till later in the week.  Hopefully it will come loose.

haha....yeah, I image it being in the 30's in Dec wouldn't seems all that impressive to ppl from NH.  No I haven't bought the rebuild kit yet.  My bike wont be on the rode till the spring, just working on the master cylinder waiting on other parts to come in.  How fast was your kit shipped?  I'll have to look at service Honda, Let me know how it works for you.

I just finished rebuilding my 74's master cylinder, and it was a real SOB.  As others have advised, soak the living daylights out of it in penetrating oil until it at least will rotate in the groove....mine was rusted solid and it took SEVERAL hours to break it loose.  Bought a set of the long circlip pliers from Vintage 750 and it finally did the trick.  New one went in like a breeze.... ;D
