1974 CB550 plug wires
« on: December 31, 2010, 07:34:30 AM »
I am new to the forum and I have another greenhorn question about my cafe project. I need to install new plug wires and caps on my project bike. The stock coils are good but the wires and the caps are very worn and a couple of them are almost too short to reach. These stock coils have the wire coming out of them and extend to the plug caps. Any ideas to renew these wires and caps would be appreciated and also where to get these parts. Do I need to replace the coils or is there a way to add new wire and how? Thanks in advance, this group is awesome for information! Hope I can give some back in the future.  -John

I picked up new wires and a special splicer piece that allows you to cut the wire near the coil, and then place this "coupler" type piece on, then te new wire which will go to the cap.

I got them at Z1. Think they were in the ignition section.

Yes here is the link http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=1890 they are 5.57 each. I plan to get them so I can change out the wires on mine. Should work. Replacement coils are around $44 each so it maybe worth while to try this and see how it goes.
