front caliper glue??
« on: January 03, 2011, 11:30:06 AM »
So I'm in the process of rebuilding my front caliper ('78 750k) and had a question.  I used the "grease gun method" to push out the piston (which by the way is phenomenally easy) and noticed that there is this sticky glue-like rubbery substance that holds the pads to the piston and backside of the base plate.  What is this stuff?  I'm assuming I'll have to use some of it when I mount up the new pads?  Does it come with the pads when I buy them?

Thanks  ;D

I may be wrong, but i think it was put there by a PO. Nothing like that stock I've ever heard of. Some will put a little lithium grease there to quell squealing, that's all I've ever heard of.

At least to K2, they were dry.

I certainly wouldn't put it past the PO from doing something stupid.  You'd understand if you saw the condition of the bike when I bought it.

So if there is no glue to be used, what holds the brake pad in place on the piston side of the caliper?  The other side uses a very small cotter pin to keep the pad in place against the base.

It just sits in the recess.

The pad will be in the cavity of the caliper and should stay put while you install it, but you have to keep from tipping it. Once the caliper is on the disc, the pad rides in and out (only a few thou) in the cavity of the caliper and can't go anywhere. There is a small screw in the perimeter of the pad which keeps the pad from rotating in the cavity and provides some friction to help when installing the caliper. Easy Peazy.

'Bet the PO put some "anti-squeal" stuff on it like is sometimes used on car brake pads. It is sticky before it sets up.

It sounds like an "anti-squeal" compound that would be added to the back-side of the pad.  It would help to quell some vibrations that can create a squealing noise, as well as keeping the pad more glued to the piston so that it gets withdrawn when not being applied.  There is, I believe, also a nylon washer that normally is between the piston and the pad, serving to dampen some vibration.

I've had good results in using a bit of high-temp silicone sealing compound (just a dab) on the backs of both inner and outer pads.  The one on the piston side also needs to be free to slide in its housing (the cavity of the caliper that holds it), so a bit of anti-seize on its edges helps to keep it free and moving.  None of these compounds needs to be applied in very great quantity - you don't want an excess that might run out onto the braking surfaces when hot.
