Need help with Ubuntu!!
« on: January 17, 2011, 08:31:29 PM »
All,

I need some ubuntu help!  I have an Asus EEE 1000H, and I switched from XP to Ubuntu 10.04.  I can't get the internal wireless card to work, and I tried to get a USB adapter to work which doesnt work either.  Can y'all offer some help?  I have no clue how to use NDiswrapper, like I've read everywhere...  I'd like to get it working asap since school starts soon!  Otherwise, might be upgrade time, haha!!

Thanks guys!

I use SUSE Linux

Are you using the Netbook edition of Ubuntu?

Have you tried looking/asking at http://ubuntuforums.org/ ?

Do you have a wired network option? With Ubuntu I've usually had good luck plugging into the network, then a restricted drivers icon comes up (you can also find this under the system options, additional drivers menu).  Select your card and then choose your card.  That said, I've got a eee 1005pe and the wireless comes up automatically.

Also a search on the ubuntu forums usually turns up an answer for something as common as an asus.

I am using the netbook edition and I've looked on the forums, and all that comes up is to use NDiswrapper and then the coding steps to "trick" the computer to thinking it's the right driver.

Wired networking is an option, but pointless since i bought this for it's wireless capabilities.  I havent had any pop ups when ive plugged it in.  Whats strange is that wireless worked immediately after i installed the OS, but after updating nothing...  I really don't know how to use ubuntu that much, I've played with it minimally and I have seen little tutorials on it, so I'm a total n00b with it!

All answers ive seen are for more experienced users, and I am not one of those...

I was always having to deal with the usual Windows crap on my son's web book so I decided to wipe it and install Ubuntu. As I recall I had some issues with the latest version (10.XX?). I ended up installing a 9.XX version and I haven't had to touch it since. I had a few issues with 10.04 when I installed it on my PC but running the updates and a few questions to the Ubuntu forum has it running like a top. If this is your first time to run Ubuntu, you will find it worth the effort to work through your issues. You'll never run Windows again.

I think what spwg was saying was to hook up wired and then run the check for restricted drivers and see if you find anything for the wireless.
As for not going back to windows, it depends on your use. I run 10.10 on an older desktop and it works ok but just to play a stinking cd required trying about 7 different media programs before 1 would actually work right. Even vlc on linux does not seem to work as smoothly as it does on windows. Seriously, I would like ubuntu or some other linux(have not tried others though), to make a good dent into the desktop market.
There are just some things I do though that windows does best. I like my pc games, yes I know WINE or a VM can be used but then that is one more layer and why do that?

I gave up on Ubuntu.  I had Ubuntu Studio, for A/V stuff, but I could never get it to recognize some of the hardware installed on the machine for it.  I still have it in the shop, but my main desktop is a machine I put together from parts and now run Windows 7 on it.

yes, precisely.   you only need to get the driver installed while wired, then you're free to roam.

I took a quick look, and it does appear to be a documented issue for some... but it appears to be relatively easy to fix.

Don't be too hard on yourself...you might be amazed how many times, after hours of troubleshooting, something still doesn't work, because it's not turned on or a cables not plugged in. I spent about an hour on the phone with a guy, after ATT got him all hooked up and said he was good to go wireless, who couldn't get his iphone to connect. He had a desktop plugged in with a good internet connection, we tried this, and that, resetting settings, restarting devices, "his" network would appear, then disappear, ...turns out the "all in one" box ATT installed, and gave him a security code for, was just a cable modem with no wireless capability. "His" network was someone else in the neighborhood.
