My brother had a '73 El Camino.  He beat the dog snot out of that vehicle.  He drove it for well over 100,000 miles.  The picture above with 2 small bikes in the back doesn't show the floor jack boosting the back up.  They were bad for capacity.  You really couldn't treat it much like a pickup.  It was okay for small-ish furniture but not getting a load of dirt, wood, rock, etc.  I think 500 lbs in the back would make it sag plenty.  We attempted to haul roofing tiles once and it wasn't pretty.  I think my brother got some sort of booster shocks for that reason.  I think you're fine pulling as most of them had V8s, turbo 350s and a 10 bolt rear end...  All of which was fine for pulling a trailer with bikes or a small boat.

I've always felt a need for a truck of some sort and I've settled into the 4 door 1/2 ton short bed variety (great for a family).  A single guy might be able to get by with a Ranchero, El Camino or regular cab pickup.

That one is actually in San Antonio. The ones in Austin and RR are apparently no good. I joined a Camino forum and there are a couple Austin guys there that said those two get passed around every few years. One of them even offered to go and look at one with me. Thats pretty sweet.

I have a feeling this one is high mileage but my girlfriends mom might be able to find an engine out of a wrecked car and swap them out if it gives me problems.

I am hoping that the bike rides easily in the bed. Maybe I should take it with me and see if it loads up alright. I only expect to haul it to midland once or twice a year this way. Hopefully this is just a car that I can work on after a while. I should graduate this december then I plan on landing a 100k a year job right out the gate and buy something brand new...  ::)

I almost bought an old Cadillac funeral flower car. #1 it is a Caddy, #2 it was basically an el Camino, #3 it had some slow and low easy miles, #4 it was already murdered out. BUT, life is a pain, I am not popular enough to be different and.....now I am looking at Ford econoline vans (the pickup ones) http://www.usedtruckfinder.info/ford-e-series-van-e-100-ford-econoline-truck-streetrod.htm

My bikes won't fit in my Tacoma bed [6'6"] with the tailgate up, has not been a problem.

with old Chevy's...make sure you get the solidest body you can afford(shouldn't be too hard in Texas)  All the mechanical stuff is really cheap and really plentiful.  You can get anything from a huge blower stickin' out of the hood for under $10k to a good compression in the junkyard slap some gaskets in it and go 305 for $150.  Just about everything interchanges, just stick with small blocks...big blocks are scarce and over twice as much moola.
If it works good, it looks good...

Thanks for the info. My family and girlfriend are trying to talk me into a newer truck. But I kind of want this for the same reason I wanted the bike. You dont see them often, you dont have to worry about the next model making yours obsolete, and they look sweet.

I am getting the white and blue one looked at this weekend. There is also a blue one in the same area that might be cheaper. And another in san antonio that I want to look at this weekend. Hopefully I can sell my car immediately.

The prices on airline tickets are inching up. I need to get it in the next couple weeks.

i dont know about your smog laws over there but i would steer clear of the 305,earlier 307, 350 or even 302 are the prime stock engines, the 327 is becoming rarer, you can mix and match a lot of chev blocks and cranks and come up with a bigger motor than its casting number specifies,or if you just want to drop an engine in and drive it without mucking around, fit what you find,i like the chevy small block.

Here in the states, smog laws vary from state to state.  In Michigan you can pretty much drive around with a Union Carbide cyanide smoke stack with four wheels.  I don't know about Texas.  I agree that most 305's are saddled with poorly designed emission crap that can be removed with the result of a poor performing but dependable lump.  Anti-Johnny, the chevy small block is simpler engine design than the sohc-4, but you also gotta realize that you can't pull the motor by laying the frame on it's side! ;)

I dont think you guys are going to be near austin. I would ride out for the day if you were. texas is bigger than most countries in the world so I guess its kind of hard to get us all together. I know there are like 5 of us in this area though.

Check the up-dated map on post #1 of our team page. High-jack over... :D

Back to the subject, I never liked the looks of the late model El Camino's, until I saw one that had a serious make-over. It looked good! He added a front air dam, (for a Monte Carlo?), and painted it black. He also threw in a thumping big block for sound effects.
Don't fear a 305; they respond to the same upgrades as any motor, to a point, and are relatively cheap, as the hot-rodders would rather start with a 350. Parts for the small block Chevy are cheaper and more readily available than any other V-8.
When you're rolling in the big bucks, swap in a modern LS motor!

Yeah I would like a 69, but they sell for a lot even busted up and missing a motor.

I think I am going to look at an 83 and an 81 this weekend. The 83 has over 200k miles on it but has been maintained, so he says. I guess we will see.

If the frame and body are good, you have a good start (I'm more queasy about body work and frame corrosion).  At 200K, I'd consider the engine, trans and front end components a question mark.  Even well maintained, those components are "due" at 200K.  I've never considered the engine and trans a big deal to swap out (nor the front end parts).

Only problem is that the kid that owns it doesnt have a texas title. Never registered it when he moved from colorado.

It was also rough to start up, but he said it was because he hadnt started it in a few days and it had run out of gas.

So perhaps fuel pump is out. it idled high so maybe carbs need to be rebuilt or tinkered with. AC blows hot but not cold. Could be a compressor, but more than likely needs everything. Ive never done a flush on one of these so I dont know if thats worth a try.

The clutch, brakes, tires, radiator are all new. It accelerated fine and handled good. I only got it up to about 55.

I had to put the clutch to the floor though to swap gears. I dont know what that might mean.

So. I think I am selling my car today. Ill pay off my class and see what that leaves me. might try relying on the bike and a bicycle for a while. see how that goes.

I dont know how much it will be for him to get it registered and I dont know how much a bonded title would be or if thats worth it.

If thats a 4 speed car, you have something desirable to work with. I have seen dozens like the brown one you just posted and all were autos! Lucky that vehicle missed the cash for clunkers a couple years ago! I heard some sad/incredible tales from an auto recycler in Daytona! I bought a roof for a 91 Olds Convertible. They were telling me stories of El Caminos and Montes coming in and being parted out fast.
Edit, I had to look. But I had the chance to buy one like yours only rougher with a 267 V-8 auto. I had to ask a pro about that! (Dad) He said it was made! I also found an article calling the 267 the rattlesnake motor! Is it a 267 4speed? If so check vin#s and you may well have a rare on its way to collectable piece.

Don't know what the value is on those in your area but its getting high here... I'd say its worth close to that mark... parts are readily available from all kinds of GM G bodies with the exception of glass and body... as for the clutch not sure if it's hydraulic or mechanical on that one but if its hydraulic it may have air in the system/ weak master cylinder they are tough to bleed... not sure how much trouble getting the title is there or how intense your government vehicle inspections are but I'd buy it here if it needed one. just my two cents ;)
