threebond vs. loctite

Run out of my last tube of threebond 1194 and need to close engine cases.... :-\

just happen to have close by a shop that has a really good range of loctite products.

so any idea of a loctite sealant number is a good match to TB1194?

there are a good dozen  or more loctite sealants there and the shop guy doesnt know crap about what's good for motorcycle crankcases

I've been told 573 and 574 work well, but i've never personally used them.

I've been told 573 and 574 work well, but i've never personally used them.

hei paul, long time, check your PM's...

checked and 573 and 574 are "anaerobic acrylics", funky spacey sh!t and they dont look cheap either, but could be fun to try. you could apply the thing, and go have a beer before you close down the cases :)

Any other ideas for proven loctite products out there?

Yeah, those products were recommended by a porsche/ BMW builder I know, so it's not surprising they'd be on the spendy side... BTW, great build thread you sent me! I'll be following it closely.

well, ended up getting loctite 518, another sort of anaerobic. Based on some more stuff i've read seems slightly thicker than 573/4.  Looks like TB1194 is still good stuff but a bit old school, these anaerobics have even better quality + the advantage of drying only under pressure.

will nevertheless kill you if it leaks... its you who got me into all these space age stuff in the first place

just little report on the stuff: loctite 518 is a real pleasure to work with :)

don't know how it will seal but if it works as good as it looks, then i'm signed on the stuff!

the stuff comes already in a handy little syringe to apply it with and the fact that it doesn't start to dry until you press the thing together is really useful with a big delicate job as a crankcase.

even the very little bead i put was like twice what was needed, no need to spread it either

after closing, wiped off the rest with paper towel and then paint solvent. looks promising.

the idea/advantage here is that the surplus material never dries or hardens so in first use it is sort of flushed off by the oil.
