advice/ opinions on chopper for sale in buffalo
« on: January 28, 2011, 01:21:23 PM »
i posted a link the other day in the bikes for sale. it's a 70's cb 750 chopper. big hang up is he has no title or registration.  curiosity got the best of me and i had to go check it out. it's got an aftermarket frame from ebay with this vin stamped in it CB750-1028624. from the sheet i have in front of me, the vin comes back as a 70. Had my sheriff buddy run, comes back clean in NYS. I wish i could have got some engine numbers too, but i couldn't find them, they are supposed to be behind the starter on the flat spot right....?  well, there is no flat spot on the case behind the motor, could the engine numbers be elsewhere? did someone at sometime grind it off and smooth it out. i have blank 750 engine cases here, no numbers, but the flat spot for numbers is there. if the engine came out of the bike the vin came from that'd be worth some decent money right? guy said i could have the bike for 700 bucks.  let me know what you think everyone.

The part that makes old engines valuable is the crankcases. (sand cast)  Sounds like those crankcases have been replaced (replacement cases were never sandcast, IIRC) or otherwise modified to where the value is lost, seems to me. Other than it being a CB750, of course.

That's what i think. I'm open for correction.

Here's the ad: http://buffalo.craigslist.org/mcy/2181136255.html

You will definitely have some issues when you attempt to register the bike.  My 71 CB750 has a transferable registration in NY not a title.  The registration is off the frame numbers.  Whatever numbers are on that frame they aren't Honda numbers.  Here's where you have the problem.  How will you register it with the frame numbers when the frame numbers obviously didn't come from Honda because it isn't a Honda frame?  The engine number is essentially useless here as well becuase NY doesn't title/register by engine number. I'm sure you could turn it around for $700+ if the hassle of registration becomes too much.  Just my opinion.

if it's a 78 or later SOHC the engine vin is moved over just slightly and rotated 90 degrees from where it is on the earlier bikes. And in WI at least they did register the engine vin instead of the frame. I think that's worth $1k in parts at least depending on what that front fork is.

I saw this listing a day or so ago. It was far enough away from me that I didn't really look at it but now that I am...depending on where you live and what your DMV laws are...it's probably a good deal...to the right person...in the right zip code. Now that I think about it...I might go pick it up. ;) ;D ;D

Just use that title to register it.
ONce you have plates on it, the law won't look at your VIN.
But, when you want to sell, it's a diff story...
