starter delete
« on: February 02, 2011, 06:37:31 PM »
guys.  i've tried searching, but i got a bunch of info that didn't quite all add up.

i'm trying to delete the starter completely on my build and i need some advice on what all will be required to save and get rid of.  i know i can ditch the starter motor, and i have a plug coming from Voxonda to act as a plug and a crank vent.  i seperated my rotor from my crank today and i'm wondering if i can get rid of the starter gear, or if i still need that for the bearing assembly on it's ID.

also, do i need a starter relay at all for the electrical system?  i'm going to run a Hondaman ignition box, and also a digital guard dog RFID system, just for some extra piece of mind.  i might also try to run the wires through as much of the frame as i can, for cleanliness and also for some extra security.  (i know i'm being very optimistic about this, but i want it!!

if someone has totally taken out the kick starter, and has a walk through or info, i would appreciate it!  thanks again guys!

What bike? You should be able to pull the starter gears with no issue.

The starter relay is a connecting point for the charging system, battery and main power. It can easily be eliminated but you have to rewire to maintain the charging and power connections. (Red, red/white and battery should be connected to each other)

red/white-charging
red(2)- main power from battery and out to fuse block
Yellow/red- starter (eliminate)
green/red- ground from clutch switch(eliminate)

Yeah, I'm planing on doing the same thing. My main hang up is not being 100% clear on how everything works as the completed and then stripped down system. I'm no motorcycle mechanic... Anyone know of a good info source?

It's a '76 750k.  I need to wait to button up the cases to see how the starter gear bearing installs and if it's really necessary...

Are you talking about the starter/sprag gear behind the rotor? I know you can remove the gear that is in direct contact with the starter spur. The sprag should be removable also. The only real benefit would be a little less bearing drag since it does not spin when the motor is running. I would leave it in should you need to install a starter at some point. You might have tuning issues at some point that won't allow you to kick it over.

i was thinking about leaving it for that exact reason.  as much as i don't want the starter, should i ever need it for some reason, this option would allow me to use it.  i could get away with a "hot wire" w/o having a starter relay.

on the other side, i do have a stator puller, so throwing the sprag gear back on wouldn't be that big of a deal if i needed to add the starter back later, with the motor installed.
