Anyone here collect stamps?
« on: February 10, 2011, 01:55:21 PM »
I just came across a couple of envelopes of stamps. I am not really stamp educated and was wondering if there are any good forums for it. Some of the "worldy" ones are pretty interesting but again I am uneducated when it comes to stamps. I am not really sure when they are from but I would guess 50's to 70's as some have pretty complicated color patterns. Anyone see any thing that sticks out? If so I can get a better photo.

I was a very avid Shortwave Listener in the 70's-90's, not so much now.  I kept all the stamps from all over the world.  Interesting to collect.

Google "philatelist forums" and I'm sure you will find some. I collected as a kid, but a long, long, long time ago.  :)

I'm with Bob on this one, Google for stamp forums. When I was a kid I took an interest in stamps and then discovered a great aunt who had been stamping for years. I collected plenty on my own but she would send me all sorts of stamps that either didn't interest her or that she already had. I think my stamps are somewhere at my Mom's house but it would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack to find them.

I see a bunch of ordinary postage from the '60s and '70s. Most of those were printed by the millions.. billions for some. The only thing that sticks out as faintly unusual is that pair at the top with the yellow flowers and green leaves.

Most of the stamps from Eastern Europe from that era that I have seen were sold pre-canceled. The govt. would print a whole mess of stamps(usually big fancy pictorials), print a cancellation mark on them, and sell them to collectors to raise cash. Unused and 'used' have the same catalog price. Actually used on an envelope doesn't turn up as often.

Enjoy.

Yup, after doing a little research they are all about as common as dirt. Oh well. Trying to find out about them is pretty fun, all the U.S. stamps are cataloged well (http://www.theswedishtiger.com/ID.html) so it is easy to find them. Not so much with the foreign ones but still nothing too rare.

I think I will frame them and put them up on a wall just for for anyways.
