oil cooler mounting help!
« on: February 11, 2011, 05:25:39 PM »
hey guys.  i pulled out the oil filter i have for my build and i'm thinking of making a mount for it that will bolt up to the stock horn location.  i would like some advice from those of you that have done it or are just better with metal working than i am.  i'm going to clean it up and repaint it with some radiator paint.

i was thinking of just popping a couple holes in a sheet of aluminum and bolt this to the horn mount.  then bend the plate so it will allow the cooler to clear the frame since the mounts are in the middle.  either this or run a spacer and some longer bolts through the cooler mounts to push it off t he plate and give it ample room from the frame.  i'll have to throw the triple trees on there before anything is final, but i just wanted to see what everyones thoughts were.  i've also considered trying to get it to lay as flat to the frame as i can so it's not sticking out so much.

it does look a little awkward right under the neck, as it's quite a large, albeit effective, oil cooler...  thoughts??

Hi,

...take a look at the picture but without a thermostat I would not mount it.

Good luck...Georg

i have an oil cooler bypass in the mail, the one made by Jagg that many people have used these before with great success on here!  i think a piece of aluminum with some new rubber for the mounts would help keep it from vibrating much...

Since you can change positions with those mounting straps you have lots of options but it may be necessary to weld on a tab or two. If you plan to run the lines down the frame downtubes and fasten with zipties that helps stabilize & support a lot of the weight but those Trident coolers are wide and just attaching in the middle can act like a hinge.

Could you explain what you mean when you say it will act like a hinge?  And I believe the lines on the frame would be best, for cleanliness and extra support!  Thanks so far guys!!

I think because of the width of those Trident coolers they should be attached at two pionts, not just in the center.

Well I'll def. use both the mounts that are on there for sure!  Im still thinking the horn mounted bracket will be best, as it really won't be that big or noticeable.

Or make two clamps on the horizontal frame rail beneath the head stack. Will shoot a pic when I get home later.

Rob.
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.
