Thinking of Removing Gauges...
« on: September 23, 2010, 12:03:07 PM »
Now that I have clubmans, my gauges stick out like a sore thumb.  Is it ok to just remove the gauges and hide the wiring in the headlight?

Also, where the speedo cable meets the wheel assy, can I just remove it?  I don't want to open up a mess for myself.

^ Same question with the tach cable, wondering if it's safe to just remove it from the engine...

Anyone in MA know if gauges are required to pass inspection?

remove em. if they look bad and thats how you feel do what you want its your bike. As for the MA law and all that im clueless but in the future mini guages are never out of the question. As for the wires they can tuck away with patience. And i know several companies make plugs and such for open holes (ie tach, speedo etc) Hope this helps

Yes you need a speedometer to pass inspection in MA but all I can find on the web are references to this document which says nothing about a speedometer. Make a phone call.

For the speedo, Cyclexchange makes these:

Available here:  http://www.cyclexchange.net/Frame%20Page.htm

Mini speedo attached to the front wheel drive unit. We think this is soooooooooo cool!
Frequently asked questions:

Question: Can you see the speedo while driving down the road?
Answer: Who cares.

Question: Is this legal?
Answer: Who cares.

Question: Has this ever been done before?
Answer: Maybe, but someone will copy this. We care a lot.

This super innovative speedo kit  includes: Speedo, adaptor, and special cable.

Are there any electrical issues this could cause?  I don't want to be blowing fuses or losing grounds.  I found out when I redid my signals/tail light that much of the wiring is interconected.

Is this a clean disconnect with no hassles?

It would also be great if it was reversible.  Any input?

on my cb400 i rode without gauges for some time. no problems with wiring, i unplugged the idiot light box, and the wiring for the gauges is easily unplugged from in the headlight. no electrical issues, in fact you will be loading the system 20w less at night with no gauges to light up!

i now have returned to a single tach gauge and bicycle speedo. need to know my revs! what i really want is an electronic tach from something like a honda magna, but hard to get those in the uk..

I would definitely plug the tach hole on the valve cover to help keep water and debris out.

The speedo mech on the wheel would be easy to remove if you take the front wheel off.

Or make a custom mount to lower the guages so they don't stick up so far. Check out industrialcafes fork retrofit.

If you remove the speedo drive from the front axle you will need a spacer in its place .
