Hello! (And a fork question!)
« on: March 29, 2011, 01:02:29 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'm a huge fan of CB750s, but currently I have a couple of Triumphs in the garage (both newer then 2007, sorry, no classic iron at the moment).  However, a young friend of mine has just managed to purchase himself a CB750 K5 for a song ($400) and I've promised to help him where I can.  Seems like you folks are the resident experts, so I expect to be hanging around here a lot to ask questions, read the articles and learn what I can - I'm here to learn!

I'm posting a pic of his new bike (with his permission) - and I have a question about the front fork.  It does not appear to be stock, and to my eye the rake is steeper.  What's your take?  Has this thing been chopperized?  As you can see, it currently has a king/queen seat with crash bars and highway pegs, so it seems to me that there's a good chance.  We couldn't find any too suspicious looking welding, but he is wondering if we're going to have to to reweld the headstock to get the right rake.

At present, the idea is just to get it running and do a few basic cosmetic things to bring it back to the original look - it needs a seat, and the tank has been painted black with some fairly ghastly looking flames - we may pull the engine, currently working over the carbs and brakes.  It'll get paint down the road sometime.

Cheers, and thanks in advance for your help and wisdom!

Welcome -

Definitely has some longer fork tubes.  You can find stock ones pretty easily.

Pull the carbs and clean them thoroughly.  Do a search for "cleaning carbs"  Also take a look in the FAQ section for tune-up procedures.
These old Hondas are pretty indestructible - I'd clean the carbs, change out the oil, put some new plugs in there, set the valve tappets & cam chain, set the timing -
you might have to clean the points a bit.   I'd bet it would fire up....

Don't worry about taking the engine out just yet.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Hello and welcome. I have one in the stable with longer tubes and to me it looks like that the headstock has not been changed. Unless there were a lot of other "chopper mods" to it it would have probably been to much hassle for the PO and the forks mod was quick and fairly easy.Got any pics of it with the tank etc still on it? How many miles was it showing on the odometer?  Eric

No one has done anything to that neck, if they had you would see it easily.  Just a guess, but I'd say those tubes are about 6" over.  From what can be told by the picture they look to be in pretty good shape, someone may be willing to trade them for a stock set, one of the chopper guys; just don't forget that the fork brace (which should go with the long tubes) puts your guy on the winning side of the negotiations.

It shows just over 7K miles on the odometer.  I don't have any pictures of the tank at the moment, but I can definitely take some next time we work.  Thanks for the quick answers - it's a relief to know it's probably just the fork tubes.

Cheers,
