Make sure you pour in the 10W first and then the 40.

You can start here.http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=86318.50] http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=86318.50. Then, if you like, put "oil" in the search field and you will find lots of info, and some ribbing.  ;)

Your first mistake is assuming you should use 10W-40.....   ;D

No mistake there.  10w-40 is fine.
The mistake is thinking that cheap oil is better than replacement parts for the engine.

Cheap oil plus engine parts, or or good oil without replacement parts.  Which one is inexpensive?

During the summer I go with 20w-50 Honda oil it cost but no worries about the clutch. It's only money.

OK, with not a little trepidation I will add one comment (I promise).
Do not use automotive type motor oil in your bike . Use motorcycle specific oil due to wet type clutch for reasons discussed to death in the forum previously. Rotella will work ok tho.

There are plenty, plenty, and plenty more threads on the subject of oil (especially which ones to use). You have to make the search button your friend!!! In the meantime.....I will give you my opinion which is like my ass............everybody has one!!! I think Royal Purple is totally overkill. I don't know whats in their blend or how it reacts with our clutches. What I do know about it is its expensive!!! Our bikes call for 10-40 but people will tell you the stuff you get off the shelf at Wallyworld are more designed for newer automobiles. I don't think I would run 10-30. I also have heard the Castrol 20-50 is suited to our bikes as is 15-40 used in diesels like Rotella. When you get into the search for oil threads here.....you will find a buttload of opinions and you will have to decide for yourself which opinion you agree with. Enjoy!!!!  (Nuff sed!!!!!..........I'm off to the kitchen to build some popcorn!!!!!)

Oh boy! Another OIL THREAD!

I use Pennzoil 10W40 here and my clutch doesn't seem to mind (third year now). Once in a while it comes on sale and I buy a bunch.

The unfortunate thing about oil threads is it's gettin' pretty hard to weed through all the threads that were flamed out like this one, versus the ones that actually give useful information. Just sayin'

Well I guess I'll jump in.  I feel sorry for someone who is genuinely unsure of what to get (and hasn't mastered the search function) because there's soooo much debate on oils.  I have gone through a few different types and brands of oil in my relatively short riding career and have settled on Castrol Motorcycle Oil
http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=9022114&contentId=7040925
In my area they carry it at Autozone and it's a little cheaper than GTX.  It's only available in quarts from what I can tell.  The bike runs fine and the clutch and transmission are fine as well.  In our Honda manuals it recommends we run 10W40 Mineral oil, and Castrol 4t is just that.
As for Rotella, that is available in gallons (maybe 5 gallons too) and has been recommended to me by a few people who seem to be in the know.
Having traveled across the country on the bike this summer the question of which oil to use came up often due to different regional prominence/availability of different oils.  Basically I learned (and this has been oft repeated here) that modern blended oils are not desirable for reasons mentioned above.  Rotella kept coming up as a good alternative (and it's cheap).  But I'll probably continue to use the Castrol for peace of mind :)

If you survive this, you will do just fine here.  And later, when the next oil thread appears, you will jump in on the fun too!

How about we give the new guy a break.  There is no search function,  just the Google custom search which is as useful as teats on a bull.

I've been starring at the web page for 10 min. trying to find the search function.

At least someone posted a link to some good info on oil.

... and if there is a search function feel free to describe exactly where the "effing" thing is cuz I don't see it.

It's right above what you are reading? Glenn made it pretty obvious. (Just trying to be helpful)

There is a recent thread about the search function on the new board...you could search for it?  :)

Well, here it is, try this:

Search is under the Home button.  That is what we have for now until they can make the regular search work without beating up the server at the same time.  If you get an odd looking page, remove the wpa thing at the end of the link in the address bar and refresh.

Honda GN4 10w40. Problem solved. $18.75 for 3qts. $6.39 for OEM oil filter. $25.14 total for oil change. I can handle that. Sure I could save a few bucks by not buying this stuff from the near by Honda Dealer, but why. You know your getting the right stuff plus your giving the dealer a little business. I've been using castrol 20-50 since I bought the bike new in 1976. No problems.
I also use NAPA filters.

I use a different type of oil every time I change, always 10w 40, except in summer when I run 15 w 40, unless I cannot find it, then I run 20w 50.

Unless I have some 10w 40 around the shop, then I just use it, even if it is not a "different" type of oil.

So, I guess my original statement was more of a general concept, not a personal commitment.

BTW:

I re-polish my oil filter housing every time I change the oil.

I add a little Sea-Foam to the oil about 100 miles before I change it, unless I forget, or the mood to wrench & polish hits me and I just change the oil.
