1976 cb550k Battery confusion...
« on: April 07, 2011, 07:41:34 AM »
I am looking to buy a battery local today, and from my research thought that I was supposed to end up with a YB 12A-A. When I went to pull te battery the PO had installed, I realized for the first time that it's a FB14L-A2. It has the name "Hi Dash" on it.

Can someone please confirm for me that the YB 12A-A would be the correct type.

Also, does this one that's been in there hurt anything?

I've been charging/tendering this thing for a months now, and ashamed I never checked it out.

Thanks

The one you have is a 750 one and is just a bit bigger both physicaly and electricaly.

The 550 should have a 12N12A-4A-1 which converts to a 12A-A

hey at least your PO didn't cut the battery cage to fit a bigger battery!

The YB 12 is the Yuasa thicker bigger plate version of the 12N12A-4A-1 with the same outer dimensions.  I prefer the YB-12.

BEWARE the 750 battery has larger external dimensions.  I'm not sure how one was jammed into the space available on the CB550.
Also, the 750 Batteries have the terminal polarity reversed, compared to the 550.  So, WATCH OUT! and observe closely what battery cable goes where.  Not just what will reach to the convenient terminal.

Thanks gang. I ended up with the Scorpion battery listed in the thread that sparked my question (pun intended, ba dump dum!!!).

It was a hair smaller than my old one, and seems quite a bit lighter (good for when I need to haul the thing in from the curb to the tender!).

Measured it, wondering if I was supposed to have to charge it first. It measured over 13, higher than my old one ever did.

Got it installed without issue, but thanks for the heads up. If nothing else, I have a (un)healthy amount of fear for electrical, so I triple checked before putting it on the bike.

So excited to finally have a solid battery, taking that one component out of the equation.

I ended up with AGM from BatteryStuff.com. $59 with standard shipping, and it arrived 2 days later!  Totally happy with that.

Of course, I only got to put it in, fire it up and turn it right off. Then I got hammered with a cold. Ugh!
