Preparing rear brake drum
« on: April 22, 2011, 07:29:56 PM »
Got the back wheel off in preparation for doing the sprockets and brakes. The brake drum is a bit rusty and very dusty. Also looks kinda shiny. What's the best way to prepare it? Sandpaper?

Yes, get some rough paper and rough it up good and blow it out. You will not hurt it. You do not want it shiney in there or you may end up with squealing.

And take care not to breath any of the dust that will result. Nasty stuff, and a health risk.
Do it outside and finish off with aerosal can of brake parts cleaner.

If you haven't put it back together yet, a small amount of lube on the brake pivot shaft and the springs will keep them from rusting and getting tight. The shaft has a felt seal on the outside to hold oil and resist moisture.
