CycleX "lowering" kit
« on: May 02, 2011, 02:16:05 PM »
In my hunt for new fork tubes I came across a kit listed on CycleX's site  for a -2 fork tube set and shortened rear susp. Ive heard great things about their products and the price is awesome as well.. only issue, My bike being a 550F is that they appear to market them for 750's only.

I spoke with a gentleman today on the phone from cycleX who couldnt tell me for sure if they would work on my bike or not. So im curious if anyone has used these parts on a 550F succesfully? they are 35mm so that leads me to believe they could be used but not positive.. any feedback would be great  :)

Cycle-X triple trees tend to sit about 1" higher than stock trees so when you use stock length fork legs, the front end actually sits one inch lower. I've also read somewhere else on this forum that guys have bought -2 fork legs and only had the front end lowered by about an inch.

Their 35mm fork legs should work fine, just measure yours first (have to take the forks apart anyways) and get them to send you a set of theirs that are 2" shorter
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

Thanks for the reply bud :) If the cycleX tubes are 35mm I dont have to use there trees do I? would kind of defeat the purpose of a 2 inch drop if the trees sit an inch higher than stock as well..

Does anyone have any info on the rear shocks? do 750's and 550's share the same mounting points? im sure spring rates cant be that much dif ..

The shocks should mount fine (I hope so, I have a set but haven't fitted them yet).  They have a different spring rate than stock, much firmer from what I've read.

The 750 fork tubes, on the other hand, won't work with the 550 lowers.  IIRC, The internals for the 550s and 750s are different.  Maybe someone with more experience can confirm/deny that.  The only place I found that sells 550 fork tubes is Forking by Frank (http://www.frankmain.qpg.com/).  I haven't bought tubes from them but others here have.  A search should turn up some opinions.

Good luck,

I stand corrected about 750 legs not working with the 550 lowers.

Forking by Frank is a first class operation.
