Bill allowing people to keep roadkill OK'd

They are not quite groceries, but Illinois roads could soon be serving up dinner ingredients as a result of a bill approved by lawmakers Thursday that would allow some citizens to pick up roadkill.

Under the bill, people with proper permits could retrieve certain in-season, furry mammals killed by motorists. People could do whatever they please with the carcasses, whether it's skin them for their hides or add them to a rustic stew.

The bill passed Thursday in the Senate without opposition. It now heads to Gov. Pat Quinn's desk.

Supporters say it will cut spending because enabling ordinary citizens to keep the unfortunate animals would require fewer employees for road kill cleanup.

Alaska Highway Patrol/State Troopers call in all game animals killed on the highways.
If it hasnt spoiled, the meat gets picked up and used by the local food shelters.

I think its a good idea especially for the game animals. 
in season, i see at least 1 deer a week fall victim to a motorist.

When I was about 8 my grandmother hit a deer. I remember my dad went and picked her up and brought the deer back. We ate it. My grandma makes a good venison stew. Her Elk Stew is better, but she avoids those.

Well, about the only thing i have ever run over was a cat, and if i told the misses i picked up some pussy  on my way home and was going to eat it, i would be looking for a new  place to stay....

Around here, if you hit a deer, technically you're supposed to call the sheriff who picks it, and it gets fed to the inmates. My wife hit a deer on a backroad once, she pulled over as she was somewhat shaken by it, moments later a coule guys in a pickup stopped and asked her if she was gonna keep it. She said no, and they promptly tossed it in the back of their truck...
I think the IL "law" is good, but I had to laugh...gotta get a permit, and you can only pick 'em up if it's in season?   geez.....don't wanna see no one get busted for picking up roadkill out of season..
might see more states start doing that as more and more folks have less and less money to go grocery shopping with. Gotta lotta possum and raccoon around here...
