No spark on the 2/3 points, bad condenser?
« on: May 17, 2011, 06:18:48 pm »
On my cb750 k4, I'm getting no spark (and no current) on the 2/3 points, but everything is just fine on the 1/4 points.  Would this indicate a bad condenser?  Anyway to test further?

The condensers are identical.  Swap them, and see if the problem follows the condenser.

If you had a voltmeter, you could see if the point were getting power on that condenser terminal when the points were open.  And there should be no measurable power when the points are closed.

If no power check the connections to the coils.  And make sure the B/W to the coils is connected and powered with key and kill switch in run position.

Cheers,

I had this same problem on 1/4 the other day.  Turned out to be a connection issue.  I just unscrewed the wires, wiggled and reseated everything.

Have you used a point file, contact cleaner and air to clean the points?...could be that simple...Larry

Ok, well now we are getting somewhere.  I took all of the advise you guys provided, and finally realized that the black/white wire that the coil was plugged into was dead (no voltage).  After looking at the wiring diagrahm, I see that both coils are supposed to be sharing the B/W, thats when I plugged this dead wire it's the same connector as the other coil (there was an extra space).

Earlier, the 1/4 points only showed voltage when opened.  Now, they are constantly powered, however at least now the 2/3 points act properly (only voltage once opened).  I take it this isn't normal?

I feel like I'm almost there  ::)

Your 1,4 points are either crusty or adjusted too wide to close.

YEP!   They were too wide.  Adjusted, and voila; all good!

Thanks again guys!  Case closed 8)
