1975 CB 550F Should I buy it?
« on: May 23, 2011, 06:19:30 AM »
Hi all!

This is my first post and my first project bike! I've recently got hooked on the idea of building a cafe racer, I don't know much about bikes but have certainly wrenched a few cars over the years. I'm thinking of starting from scratch with a beater but I have this opportunity to buy a partially restored 1975 CB550F and a 1975 550F parts bike for about $1100. I think it's a good deal but would like some advice and things I should consider before going done this road.

Here is some info on the bike and pics.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Rebuilt front forks
New lowers, seals and fluid
Rebuilt front brake caliper, piston and pads
New keyed ignition
New 4 into 1 exhaust

Howdy! :D

Looks nice in the photos.  Dunno where you are but where I am is would sell for that price pretty quick.

Looks like a great starting point. Does it come with controls/switches? Paperwork good if it matters in your state.? Go get it.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Hello! I'm from Ontario Canada.  From what I've seen for sale I think it would be a great project to try and finish.  I will go see in person.

The paper work is in order and I've asked about the remaining parts needed to get it on the road.

thanks for reply

Does the engine kick over freely? When was the last time that it ran? Based on the pics it seems like a good deal. The exhaust is over $300 new, and the tank, seat and sidecovers have some value. You can also sell off all or most of the 2nd bike to get your money back. BUT, if the engine is trashed you could be looking at a lot of money to rebuild.

A mechanically sound, but cosmetically poor bike makes for a less expensive cafe than vice versa.

Thanks for replies. I believe the engine last ran two years ago. I will confirm that it has good compression and turns freely. It's a couple of hours away from my home and he will deliver for that price. Good deal I think.
