Opinions on a cb650 cafe project for sale on Craigslist

Opinions on this project for sale? I've done two 550s and my current 750KO, but I am hesitant to do a 650 because they seem like orphan bikes. I've been wanting to try my hand at building a cafe bike, though...

With 2 550's under your belt, and your current 750, I would say that you are definitely not lacking in the ability department.  In terms of doing a 650, I would say why not?  All you can do is learn more than you already know.

Now, in terms of this bike, I agree with bollingball, no where near enough info.  The only 2 positives I see at this point are that the frame/swing [sewing, really?] arm have already been powdercoated, assuming he didn't mess it up putting the motor back in, and he has what looks like a Benelli tank [I'm a fan].  I would have to go through the normal list of questions before I would even go look at it:

- Does the motor run?
- How many miles are on it?
- Is there a title?
- Says "almost all parts to complete" what does he/she know is missing?
- How long has it been their project, been apart and/or since they worked on it last? [the amount of parts they actually have, and condition of them are directly dependent on this question]

With those basic things out of the way, and it still sounding decent, going to look at it should answer anything else you wanted to know.

Good luck, definitely has the possibility to be a nice project.
'75 550F - Resto/mod - Riding - But never really finished...
'76 550K - Cafe build - On hold
'78 550K - Parts - Good engine for another day
'73 500 - Parts - Engine seized
'90 CB-1 - No longer seized! but still title-less

I agree with the statements above.  In addition, the statement "lost interest in the bike"  makes me wonder why they lost interest... a lack of focus? which brings into question the caliber of work already done.  Or is something amiss and they aren't willing to sink more money into the bike?  Go look at it, and then decide.  The 650's ARE an orphan bike but lots of parts and parts bikes are out there.

I need one of those sewing arms for my 650, where does that go?

And now this bike comes up. The guy was asking 1200 bucks a couple of days ago. I'm tempted to jump on it.

Nobody can tell you what a bike is worth to you.  If it's one you really want and you have the money, it doesn't matter what others think about the value.  If you want it, and the price is right for you, go get it now, because if the price is right for you then it's right for somebody else, too, and they're already picking up the phone.

When it comes to Craigslist, you snooze you lose!
