Damn! I broke my gas cap latch
« on: May 04, 2005, 02:44:55 AM »
It was last Sunday, when I was going to gas up. I pressed the latch and suddenly it broke. Luckily at was able to open the cap, fill the tank and close it agan but I had a hard time opening it back.

My local honda dealer say the part is discontinued, and so does www.cmsnl.com. The new part is the "lockable" latch (resembles a lock but anything flat opens it). I want to keep my bike stock. Is there anybody with a spare latch that will not mind to sell it to me?

I will try to repair mine, but it is a compound similar to metal (in Spain it's called Calamina), but more near to plastic. The break is in a point where can't almost be reinforced, so I guess it's almost impossible to glue or "jbweld" it.

So if you have a donor a CB750 with HM300 pipes is willing to accept a latch to regain its stock status...;-)

Regards

Raul

Raul,

Have you been opening the gas cap by just pressing the thumb latch, or do you press the cap down and then press the thumb latch?

It's almost impossible to open the cap if you don't press it before. So the procedure has always been: 1. Press the gas cap down. 2. Press the latch to release it. Maybe I didn't press the cap enough, I don't know. I normally don't insist on forcing things when they give resistance. (My wife wouldn't agree but that's another story...LOL)

That's the way I open mine as well, just wondered. I will have to make sure I press the cap all the way down so as not to have the same problem, the latch does seem to be a week point if you don't.

Actually, that locking piece was a stock replacement mandated by the US gov't...
seems there were a couple of off-bike accidents where the gas cap sprang open before
the male rider in question went sailing forward across the top of the tank...I'lll leave the
rest to your immagination.

It is a one piece fits all solution that honda came up with...and was applicable to the 350f, 500,
550, and 750.  The 650s had a different style cap, so, it was not applicable.

I know for a while, the local dealers would just put them on the new bikes as they took them
out of the crate and replace the ones that went thru the shop...

May not be the worst thing to do, and is entirely period correct for this bike...

I have already bought the Honda gas cap lockable latch, and installed it, but I don't like it because I want to restore my bike to original condition. Bryan, you say there were K1's delivered with the lockable latch type? When was it factory fitted for the first time? It seems I will have to have a look at my CB750 books...

What I can't see is why the original push-to-release latch would flip open in case of a crash. I don't know either somebody who was severed by the former front mudguard without lip...

Hi Raul,

I might have one in rough shape. It would probably need rechromed. I'll see if I can find it.

Raul, send me a picture of your latch, I came across a tank that may have what you need. I have a 1978 so it would be of no use to me As I have the hidden cap. Bob

I think they recalled the thumb type latches or just replaced them as the broke.  Lots of guy just smack the gas cap down and break the latch.  The key type latch is a waranty replacement item.  Atleast on my K0 anyways.  It might have become standard on the k1.

Raul...   I have atleast one key type latch. If you want it I'll just send it out to you.

I have a mid-70's CB750 tank with the push-latch you're talking about.  I'd be happy to trade it for a 'locking' one.  I bought the tank a while back with thoughts of fitting it to my CB550F, and don't care about the latch mechanism.

It's in nice condition.  I haven't looked at it in a while, but it's been stored in my basement nice and dry for the last year.  I'll need some instruction on removing it.  If you're interested, I'll snap some pics and we can work out details of an exchange if you'd like to trade.

I think The CB350K4 twin also had the same latch arrangement, I'll check on my spare tank tonight and get back!

Guys, thanks a lot for your offers. There is something I forgot though, and it is the rivet to hold the latch in place. The replacement (lockable latch) came with a thin, long chromed screw and nut. The old one was riveted, and I needed my Dremel tool to remove it, so no way of reusing it. I have the part number for it (haven't asked the Honda dealer as they hadn't the latch, so no use for the rivet alone). In case I find it, how is that rivet installed?

This afternoon I'll take some pics of the cap with the lockable latch and will post them.

Raul, you will find that pin is deleted as well but you can use a small bolt with locktited nut. If you want to get an original one off you will find one end has a "hole"  up the centre and you need a very thin but tough rod that will go up the hole without expanding the pin and just gently tap it throuogh. It can be done but its a pain. The Very original catches were modified so as to "lock on" better--I have a bulletin somewhere--and those locking catches were an original 400/4 part that Honda just decided to convert to. I have seen Brand New in the box tanks with both sorts of catch so nobody can say it aint stock!

OK guys, here you have the pics, the broken latch and the new "lockable" latch.

The good thing about the new one is that opening and closing the cap is a one-hand operation.

I have two of the locking kind but none of the latch type.

The rivet will come out if you tap it through with a nail.  I'm game for an even trade as I don't want the replacement catch.  I would rather have a nice thumb latch.

I have broken a couple trying to remove them.  I think I used too big of a nail to punch it out.  Send me  a private cotact who ever is up for a trade.

Thanks Chris.

kghost, I don't think the latch can be TIG welded, as it is not made of metal, but some kind of hard plastic that resembles metal (I don't know the english word for it). I'll try to "loctite" it or "jbweld" it, but as you can see in the pic, the contact surface is tiny and there is almost no place to use a reinforcemente. Probably I will use my dremel to drill a tiny hole through and will use a pin as reinforcement. Anyway, I'll come back with the result.

Removing the rivet was not that hard. I only was very careful to avoid the drill skipping and causing a catastrophe to my tank. I didn't want to drill too much either, so the hole in the tank was not enlarged. After eating up the biggest part of the rivet, I used one of those punches that are used to hide the heads of nails in wood, that are straight and hard. A couple of knocks with a plastic mallet and that was it.

Raul - When I broke mine (I wonder how many other guys have broken theirs?) I found a guy on ebay who was selling Honda tanks. I asked him for the old style latch, and he sent the latch and a cap too. The rivet is easy to push out. Just in case I ever need one, I've also get a new locking version standing by. You're right about the material - I don't think welding or glue would hold it together again. Richard

can't weld or jb it.  It's pot metal.  Dense, but no consistent granular structure to speak of.
